I first heard that strange word a couple of months ago. I found out It was the one word I was looking for. DS recently returned from Deployment or redeployed. His group came home. We were at the base for a quick 8 minute ceremony with maybe a thousand people. At the dismissal it was pure joy for all! Everyone, including us were quick to leave. Got to talk a lot to DS over the next couple of days. He was very pleased with his men. They all did their jobs. Spent the next few days with DS helping restart life here with my skill at helicopter parenting. Had his car towed and repaired. Cleaned out fridge, yuck! Got the power and cable restored. Helped him tackle a box of bills. Went to Walmart to buy a TV and stood in line with half his platoon. Strange that they all had the same desire to buy a TV at the same time.
He mentioned the importance of details in the things he did. Never dummy down anything for anyone. Get the soldiers to do their jobs and do them well. The one thing that stands out in this visit is eating out at a local steakhouse. One of his privates was sitting with his parents and grandparents a couple tables away. DS went over to talk to them. He made a lot of compliments about that private. The grandfather who had a Vietnam Nam Vet cap was beaming with pride. When DS returned I told him that was nice of him to do that. He said no, it was more than deserved. That 19 year old is a hell of a soldier.
