If this is a stupid question I apologize in advance....but I'm super new to the ways of the military....but

Could the current situation in Ukraine in anyway effect the decision making in Washington in regards to military spending and the direction the budget seems to be going?

Who knows? Not me. But I wouldn't hold my breath. The Arab Spring was on a regional scale and involved direct NATO intervention. We aren't talking about reversing cuts because of the situation in the Middle East. If you want a two-cent answer, I don't see problems in Russia's back yard will make any difference in how we allocate military funding unless it somehow spills into the rest of Europe.

+1 to mbitr, at least from the administration's perspective. I expect the President's defense budget will encounter heavy opposition in Congress anyway, so it may strengthen the opposition to the cuts.

More empty threats by the current administration. I wouldn't take it any more serious than the Russians will.

Russian Involvement in Ukraine

In answer to your question about military funding increasing because of Russian involvement in Ukraine....My opinion is both yes and no.

This administration is elected by people who vote for "entitlement programs". the other party is elected by people who are more conservative in their views and are pro-national defense. Since there is never enough money to go around, each party cuts the others sacred cow to pay for their own. I am being kind here,; I am a staunch supporter of national defense and am less inclined in giving kids trophies for just showing up.

So unless Americans start dying by the thousand, I wouldn't envision any immediate reversal on military spending...unless there was a huge entitlement program attached to it also.

Which drones are armed with the empty threats? I've only seen him use the ones with Hellfires. I must have overlooked it while I was reading about how he vetoed that recent Veterans bill which Republicans sent sailing through the Senate.

Military spending is an overly complex issue that has more to do with the interests of states and Congressional districts than party lines. If we continue to point the finger at one side or one man sitting in one chair, we ignore the waste and mismanagement endemic in the defense budget. See F35, BRAC, Land Warrior, C-27J's mothballed off the factory line, buying tanks the Army doesn't need, twelve bajillion camouflage patterns, and the list goes on. If your son or daughter doesn't have a job in four years, you should be upset that it's okay cut programs for soldiers, their families, and veterans but anything related to the military industrial complex is a golden calf. I am convinced the soldier/veteran will always draw the short straw here so long as it's okay to throw money into a national pit so your district gets to collect the pocket change it spits out.

Must have missed the news about the US drone strikes in the Ukraine. Perhaps you could post a link?
Hopefully the current administration doesn't draw another line that no one dares cross.

Already stated "their will be costs".
I guess now we get to see what was meant by "costs".

Bringing ROTC into the discussion, I'm thinking the CULP mission to Ukraine is looking shaky.

DS was in Kiev in 2012 for Project Go. The group was originally to go to Kazan, Russia. Applied for Visas and everything. Kazan was cancelled and the group was sent to Kiev the study "Russian".

Will make a gigantic reach by suggesting that the lack of involvement by the Ukrainian Military in the recent troubles suggests more sympathy with the pro-Euros than the pro-Russians. That being the case, they will be hungry to foster any and all ties with the West. We know where the current gov't's sympathies lie. The decision will probably then be made stateside based on the breadth and depth of the civil unrest.

DS's only complaint was the frequency of police shakedowns and the refusal of many Ukrainians to speak Russian.

Will keep fingers crossed that the mission goes on. There is nothing like experiencing history from the middle of it, before it even becomes history.

DS' CULP mission to the Ukraine has been transferred to Romania.

Good to hear. Hopefully, there's enough time to plan that they don't have to mash a bunch of different missions into a single over-sized one.

With all the attention on flight 370....we blinked and now somewhere between 40,000 and 80,000 Russian troops are doing "exercises" alongside the Ukrainian border...

Hopefully this will be in the back of congress's heads as they come up with their numbers for 2016...

I hope so too, but I think the number that will really be in their head is $17,000,000,000,000.00+.

No matter what they decide with regards to the military budget it isn't going to affect that number much. The military is just an easier target that they can use while they continue to stick their heads in the sand on the real drivers of the debt.
