Hello everyone I am an applicant for the class of 2018 and was curious about how the Pell Grant works. I am estimated to receive over $5000 from the Pell Grant and was wondering how this work if I attended West Point. Would it go directly into my cadet account or would I have to give it back?

I believe the pell grant is slated for tuition only and since tuition is free, I can only assume they will not pay it out.

These are two government programs... I would think it would be considered double dipping. Make sure to apply for things that are not designated tuition only and those monies can be delivered to your cadet account

My understanding is that the Pell Grant is awarded by a school listed on your FAFSA and good only for that school. I don't believe it's transferrable. One of the criteria for the award is "cost of attendance" of the school you applied to.

Sorry I was confusing it with a state grant. Yes based on school and the reward will be different. If you look up the federal costs of the academy on the fafsa website there is no cost so I would assume no reward. There is some cost to the academy if you look at it that way but they also pay a monthly stipend so not really.

You can't fill out a FAFSA for the academies, anyways. They don't show up on the search. Since the Pell Grant is handed out via FAFSA (and being that it's for tuition), it cannot be given out to academy appointees.
