Founders Day dinner, Interview or social?

So, my district I've been told is really competitive and as far as I know no one has received an appointment from it. My field force rep emailed me tonight inviting me to the founders day dinner for the West Point AOG. In it he says it is limited to the top eight for admission to the Academy and the prep school. There is an informal Q&A for us with the FFR and a couple of graduates before the dinner for us to meet the other candidates and graduates. I'm so grateful and honored to have made it this far. My question is should I treat this like another interview in the sense of prepare some solid questions and prepare to have my mind picked a little bit, or go to enjoy an evening? If I should prepare what do you recommend? Sorry I know this is long winded, but any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Founders....

Founders day is hugh day for the WP Alumnus and members of that club. Its common before the dinner to have a Q and A time for prospective applicants and their families. I would go and enjoy yourself. Dress very nice. Meet the other applicants and their families also.

They care enough about you to invite you.

I will, thank you for the information. I'm just getting a little wearied out by the waiting game. Hopefully only a couple more weeks though!!

Will do! One last question, is it common to limit the Q and A to only the top 8 candidates of that year?

No not necessarily. It all depends on how many openings or slots are available that year. I wouldn't worry about it. Don't go in thinking they have a big surprise for you. Just go have a great time and meet people to put a name to a face, network and get advice. Keep those contacts.

Lot of times the guest speaker is in that Q&A session. Depending on the rotation between societies, it could be the Supt, Comm, Dean, or one of the department directors (to include admissions) who sit on the admissions committee. Pretty sure COL Walker keeps a pretty close tab on who they invite, so take it as a good sign, but make sure you make a good impression.
 
The head of admissions is speaking at our founder's day this year, so it is definitely worth going to if you are invited.
 
I would consider the invite a good sign that an appointment is within reach. It is primarily social and I would not sweat the "interview" part. Our region always holds a parent's club meeting before the dinner where parents of current cadets can interact with candidates and parents of prospective cadets. There will likely also be current cadets who attend.

The dinner isn't necessarily cheap (for your family) however it will give you an idea of what formal military dinners may be like - something you will do numerous times at the academy and afterwards.

I'm curious if the Founders Day dinner has ever been used as a venue to present appointments. My DS was lucky enough to have already received his appointment, but several others on the invite list have not. The Commandant will be at our local event and the candidates have been instructed to be there early for a meeting with the Commandant.

Would the Commandant come with some appointments in hand for such an event?
 
Thanks for the help on this thread! I went to the dinner last night and it was a real honor and treat to be there. I learned a lot about what it means to be a West Pointer. Overall I'll always be grateful for being able to attend the dinner was an evening I'll never forget! I made some great contacts and learned even more about the academy and the kind of people it produces.

Awesome. I knew you would have a great time. Keep those contacts and call them time to time and let them know how you are progressing.
