DS' Senior schedule question:

He's registering for classes soon and will be taking AP Lit, AP Calculus, AP Gov., Physics, and a mandatory fine art. He's going to take independent PE, and either take AP German 4 or AP Psychology.

He'd like to take both German and Psych., but that isn't an option. In the eyes of admissions which one should he take, and could possibly validate?

Thank you

Taking AP Psychology and getting a 5 on the test (it may be a 4 but I'm not too sure) can validate the Leadership, Ethics, and Law class that Plebes must take, though getting a 4 on AP language tests can validate language classes if you choose to major/minor in them. I believe the only language majors available are Arabic and Chinese.

Yeah I have to agree with Academy_Hopeful19. USNA offers foreign language majors in obly Chinese and Arabic but they also have about 7(I believe) foreign language minors that includes German. If you want to minor in German, take AP German 4, if not I suggests taking Psychology. Not also Psychology will be more useful like the first reply said, It is waaaaay more fun than German in my opinion.

Just to clarify/correct on what Academy_hopeful19 said, regardless of whether you get a 5 on the AP German or AP Psych test, that does not determine whether you will be able to validate classes at USNA. Candidates are given the opportunity to validate classes during plebe summer but cannot validate classes using the score they got on the AP test. So now considering that the AP tests don't really matter, other than looking impressive, I would take AP German 4. It shows consistency, hard work, and progress. I took Latin 1 starting in 8th grade and worked my way up to AP Latin 5 my senior year.

Oh sorry I thought that applied to all classes. Appears I was wrong. Now i gotta start studying for this AP Psych exam haha

AP Calc BC validates Calc I+II.

AP USH/Euro + World validates West and the Modern World.

AP English Lang/Lit validates English I.

AP Gov validates Government and Constitutional Development.

The above four are all core courses, and WILL help you with your matrix if you validate.

Calc III, Chem, Physics, English II, and all languages can be validated during Plebe Summer.

AP Psychology validates Human Behavior. It is not a core course, will most likely end up as useless extra credits, or take the place of a free elective for Group 2/Group 3. AP Psych does not validate any core LEL courses.

Other classes can be validated per department policies during the academic year. USNA doesn't just dump your work on the side of the road. If you have relevant coursework that is equivalent to a class offered here, you will get credit where credit is due.

I'm a little confused as to how AP's and summer validation work. Do you need to take the AP test and score high enough to validate core classes / take AP test and score high enough to try validation? Or can you skip an AP test (for let's say Calc) and try to validate Calc I during Plebe summer?
