Problems persist at Kings Point?

Hello,

I have been accepted into USMMA as of about a month now and I am seriously considering attending, almost 100% sure. However, I was looking around on the internet and saw that there have been problems in the recent past at Kings Point, such as teacher-student fraternization and the hiring and removal of 4 superintendents in 4 years. Does anyone know if there are still these kinds of issues there, particularly having to do with the administration?

Thank you so much!

Congrats on being accepted to the entering class of 2018 . If you are seriously considering attending USMMA and are nearly 100% certain you would like to enroll , this should make your decision 150% certain:

There are no current "issues" at Kings Point! 200% certain of this !

If you have been offered admission to the incoming class at USMMA and accept, it will be the best decision you have ever made in your life to date.

I promise that if you accept the offer and graduate one day, you will look back upon this decision as possibly the best decision you ever made in your life!

Good luck with your decision!

welcome

No problems at Kings Point. Don't read into the turn over of superintendents... that is a common thing for all Academies... and I might add the current Super. is doing a great job!
Have no clue what you are referring to with the teacher issues. Some professors are very hard, some are not. Some are really loved, some are not. It's that way at every university! ((Don't believe everything you read I suggest?))

Congrats on your appointment and welcome to the USMMA family. :thumb:

Perhaps the most important reason for attending KP; are you sure that you want to pursue a career in the US Merchant fleet? At least at KP, if you survive through the first two years of the program, you will have some kind of idea of what it is like and if you really want to. . . . The problems that you mention are just mere distractions. When I attended, there were certain issues with the Superintendent, but they had little (or dare I say, no) impact on cadet life.

If you're worried, don't go, in fact turn down that appointment ASAP. I mean if you want to even consider throwing away a four year fully paid education at one of the best schools in the country based on dated information you read on the internet by all means do so. There is a long line of equally qualified candidates waiting to be offered the spot now there for you.

If on the other hand you really want to understand what's going on and make an informed decision and choice my recommendation is to immediately schedule an overnight visit and spend time on campus talking with current students about the reality that is USMMA today. Then go back home think about what you actually saw and decide if a four year commitment to attending and graduating from USMMA is something you think is for you and worth the effort it will take to graduate. The truth is gaining admissions to any of the Federal Academies is a great opportunity and really hard. Attending and graduating is even harder and will take as much or more commitment from you.

Good Luck and please don't believe everything you read or hear - no amount of second hand or third hand information can be worth even one piece of information you gather first hand in making important decisions in your life. Sorry for the terse tone, I'm just tiered of these types of questions based on biased, dated information and posts around the web and even this forum - and likely some of those posts are from me or people like me but as noted they are now generally 3+ years old and things have moved forward. But as I note - best way to find out and verify USMMA is somewhere for you is an overnight visit.

For whatever it is worth as second hand information, my DS and I visited KP one fine summer day for an open house 2012. We also had a distant connection with one of the mids and DS arranged to meet with him that day to hear from someone not involved with the 'official' presentations. The Mid was very pleased with his choice to go to school there and complained of/cautioned us about nothing.
I subscribe to CMakin's post... if you want a career in what they are teaching, you will be fine. The Super's trouble or trouble for anyone else in the admin will have little if any impact on your daily life, unless you let it rent space in your head.

Just be sure the decision you make is your own and not because it's what your parents want. USMMA is a great place. It seems there are always some students who end up at the Academy that really don't want to be there. If that's the case you are robbing some other person of the chance of a lifetime.

Yup. The program is not easy. Being motivated and having an "eye on the prize" is what got me through. Did I like it? Not really. Am I glad that I made it through? You bet. . . .

Hey bud,

I recently recieved my offer of appointment from Kings Point and I am going to be visit in a couple of days. I'll be sure to ask the midshipmen about any issues at KP and to post my findings on this thread.

I hope it'll help you, good luck!

Facilities at KP

So I've got back from my visit to KP.

their was quite a bit of construction going on while I was there, dorms being renovated, the pier is getting fixed, etc. Looks like the authorities are trying to bring KP back to it's former glory, which is very very good. The DoT has released many documents in the past few years concerning the "Strategic plan" which intends to bring the KP facilities on par with her sister academies. So if you want to learn more a obout how the DoT is addressingissues that have developed so far, you could find that info online.

I wouldn't worry about any of the problems you might have heard/read about. KP has a beautiful, but small campus.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, everyone, for your extremely helpful answers, and thank you ReconPing for giving me information about what you saw out there. I appreciate it.

I'm sorry for the rather brief response and all the grammar/spelling errors. I posted it from my phone shortly after my visit and didn't have much time to run through it before it posted.

I also visited KP (actually at the same time) It was awesome, the mids were nice, they said what was great-- most of it... and what was not so great--the food/it is winter and dark and cold outside... Great experience.

Yeah, the food is... better than food at The Citadel but not as good as food at the Naval Academy. However, I believe the higher ups are actually trying to improve the food at Kings Point as part of an effort to raise student morale. So... that's good. let's hope they do this soon :)

That has been a 25 year effort. Don't expect results any time soon.

If the food is edible, it doesn't necessarily need to be also very tasty.

It's the edible part that is in question. I don't think the tasty part is even up for debate.

I sat at a table with an upperclassmen from Montana who had done meat inspection as part of FFA. He said that some of meat we were getting was occasionally so bad, that it is normally what is used for animal feed.

better

According to my DD the food has gotten better. Kitchen remodel is done and the new food service company is making use of it and has brought back some if the mids favorite dinners.
