College Applicants

Was wondering if many college applicants to USMA have been hearing any good news. Good luck to all.

I heard about a week ago. I'm in the NE region.

I heard a week ago as well, and I am out of the upper midwest.

I heard today.

My son did not make it in to West Point this year as a senior in high school. He wants to reapply next year. My question are there areas of the admissions process he does not have to redo? Will he have to rewrite the essays? Can a majority of the admissions process carry over to the following year?

He was very involved in the high school activities. Going into college for a year while reapplying to West Point. Is Admissions expecting him to be just as involved in college?

The only things that they keep are:

--SAT or ACT score reports

--School Official Evaluations

--Employer Evaluation

--Any extra documents you sent in, such as letters of recommendation or a
resume.

Unfortunately, this means that your DS will have to pretty much fill out everything again, as well as obtain a new nomination.

Further I wouldn't recommend using the same essays, although one could assuming one kept a copy. You child will be a year older, more mature, and more experienced. I would expect this to be reflected in the essay. Perhaps the thrust of it might be the same but there is far more to bring to it next year.

I read that the DoDMERB was good for two years.

I recommend having final HS transcripts sent in as well so that he doesn't have to do that next year while in college.

While he'll have to resubmit things like his CAR, they'll still go to his HS counselor and need to capture everything through the end of his senior year. Have that counselor's summertime contact info to get it moving along.

The new information from college will be two new SOEs, his college transcripts, and a Supplemental Information Sheet which he lists his college activities. Realizing he will be a freshman, there is not an expectation to see a high degree of leadership involved.

If he already got that TWE, I would contact his RC and find out what his shortcomings were. Chances are it is a competitive district and/or academics. Remember, your HS rank is locked once you graduate so the only real improvement you can make on academics is your test scores. If another SAT/ACT is in his future, I would plan to take it early in the fall after studying hard this summer and before getting bogged down with the college course load.

True, however for the DoDMERB exam to remain useful remember is has to be valid on R-Day of the entering year, so make sure it doesn't expire in June for a July start. DoDMERB may extend their validation if the CC contacts them and submits a form stating no significant health changes have occurred (or similar) but just make sure it will be valid through R-Day.
