Our daughter, a 1/C at the Academy, gave us a copy of "Swab Summer: Transformation At the United States Coast Guard Academy" by Markham Starr for Christmas. It was published this fall and is available through Amazon, at the Academy Exchange and probably other sources as well. It follows the class of 2016 swabs and 2014 cadre during swab summer. It provides a peek into the life of swabs as they begin their journey through the Academy. It is a wonderful resource for prospective cadets and their parents......

It's a pretty cool book for all of those associated with the classes of 2014 and 2016 as well! I want to buy a copy but they were all out when I went into the bookstore

Now that many appointments have been offered, Bumping this to top. For all incoming swabs and their parents, this book offers IMHO a fantastic perspective of what your summer will be like. It is a resource well worth acquiring.

Also watch for 'New Appointee Picnics' from your local chapter of the USCGA Parents Association. They are an opportunity to meet parents of current cadets, learn about what to expect and get invaluable tips for surviving swab summer.

The Chesapeake and Potomac chapter is planning on holding ours on 31 May for appointees from MD and VA.

Welcome Aboard Picnics

And if you've accepted your CGA appointment and you're from the Delaware Valley Region (Delaware, New Jersey and Southeastern PA), save the date of June 7th! :thumb:

That's my region! Is the picnic still happening at Air Station Atlantic City? My classmates and I from the region found the picture we took that day and were laughing about how excited/nervous/clueless we were. Definitely a fun memory to look back on and I definitely recommend it for all appointees!
