My DS is anxiously waiting to find out if he will be awarded a NROTC scholarship. On Saturday he found out that he was waitlisted at his NO. 1 ranked NROTC school. What can we do now? Is it too late to change the rankings? If he is awarded the scholarship might the school reconsider and offer him admission? I would appreciate any input.

On DS NROTC Scholarship Selection/Placement System page it states the following:

NOTE: You can change your school choices at any point by submitting a request in writing to NSTC (Naval Service Training Command) at:
NSTC OD2
250 Dallas Street Suite A
Pensacola, FL 32508-5268
or FAX (850)452-2486
or EMAIL PNSC_NROTC.scholarship@navy.mil

Many of us still waiting for a decision too. Luckily DS got into his first choice. All the best.

1. Being wait listed doesn't mean he won't be accepted. DS was wait listed at one of his lower ranked schools and eventually was accepted there. But he also had an offer from his #1 school so that's where he went. Being wait listed is NOT a rejection letter. Of course neither is it an acceptance letter. They're saying we don't know right now. He's on the cusp.

2. Receiving the NROTC scholarship may or may not make a difference to his acceptance. Depends on the school and other factors.

3. If he is awarded a scholarship to #1 school but is not accepted he could attempt to transfer that scholarship to another school after his award. Of course there could be fewer choices among his list of schools, or it might be a school that isn't even on his list of schools. No guarantees of course.

4. His chances of attending his #1 choice school with an NROTC scholarship has not yet been exhausted.

Not saying you shouldn't make changes to his list but make sure he's happy with it (and it's affordable in case there is no scholarship awarded).

I think he will leave things as is for now. Hopefully we will hear about the scholarship soon and then we can figure out how to proceed.

Consult the Common Data Set for prior years for the college/university in question. That will give you a sense for the likelihood that your DS will be admitted and can help guide you as you figure out your next steps. For instance the school my DS attends wait listed nearly 1,000 prospective students last year and admitted zero from the waitlist. If the school is highly selective, the admissions department will likely not be swayed but he fact that your DS has a scholarship from a third party.

I think this is great information. The Common Data Set will definitely show the likelihood of getting in off the waitlist. Also, I would suggest calling the Recruiting officer at the NROTC units of the schools your son is interested in to see if they still have scholarship slots available. If they don't, he may want to reorder his preference list.
