Why haven't I been rejected yet?

Unfortunately I didn't receive a nomination to USNA. Since quite a few candidates have already been rejected, I'm surprised I haven't been axed yet.

I'm not optimistic (or naive) enough to interpret that as a good sign, I know my chances are close to nil. Just a little curious.

Red nose, what state do you live in? Some states seem to have no movement at all.

Judging by the appointments thread, quite a lot of candidates from my state have already heard from USNA (I live in a very competitive area). Hopefully a miracle will occur and I'll somehow get in; if not, perhaps I'll have better luck next year.

From what I understand, the Admissions Board is taking this state by state. For example, I'm from Indiana and there has been little to no TWEs or BFEs sent. I think they're trying to get through the larger, more competitive states first.

Well if you have no nomination you have 0 chance at getting in, unless you're being considered for NAPS you're outta luck :frown:

Only thing that could happen is I could theoretically get the VP nomination; obviously I'm not holding my breath. I'm not sure if one can be wait listed without a nomination.

I think everyone should understand how slim the chances are of getting the 1 (or maybe 2) VP nomination. Yes, someone will get it -- but your odds are not good. And the SA will decide who gets the VP nom. Make sure you are working on Plans B, C, D....

Speaking of NAPS--I would kill a wild boar with my bare hands to get into NAPS--I already indicated my interest in NAPS/foundation. I don't suppose there's anything else I could do to get in at this point? When is the latest NAPS and foundation offers are sent?

Oh believe me I'm very aware of that. I'm still in the running for USAFA, so that's better than nothing. Should that not work out I have a plethora of back up plans; but I'd still reapply and give it one more shot.

A nomination is required to be considered for NAPS and NWL.

our experience

Initially my son was interested in Merchant Marine Academy (as well as AFA, NA and WP), but after really looking at their academic programs, he decided that he was no longer interested in the Merchant Marine Academy. He stopped sending them information and informed his MOC that he was no longer interested in it. So, of course, he did not get a nomination. He got a letter just after January 1st from the academy saying he was no longer qualified due to no nomination. It was a TWE, with a "thanks, but no thanks" letter. We were not surprised by this, and actually found it to be helpful in seeing what a rejection would look like (knowing all can be different, but it was a general idea).

So, here we sit on March 16th triple qualified and with nominations looming at the other three academies...and no TWE, no update on the portals, and no BFE.

This process is such a trial of patience. I know that whatever is going to happen has already been decided...we will know eventually. As for the OP and not receiving a nomination, I am surprised that they have not informed you that you are no longer qualified due to no nomination. I know all the academies are different, but they are also a bit similar. Best of luck to you!!

Don't know about NWL but I've heard conflicting information about whether a nomination is needed for NAPS. I'm fairly sure you don't need one. Any confirmation of that?

CannotBeDisplayed did not receive a nomination but he did receive an offer to NAPS.

Trust me, you need a nomination from somewhere for NAPS.

The gateway to NAPS runs through Academy Admissions; and you need a nomination to get into Admissions' NAPS candidate pool if Admissions feels you are not quite ready for your plebe year.

That's just the way it is, period.

Sorry

Not saying I don't believe you, but I've heard the exact oppose several times. I'll go ahead and ask USNA.

It doesn't make sense to me that someone would need a nomination to go to NAPS or Foundation because you definitely need to go thru the nomination process again when you are in either program to get your appointment to USNA.

To be clear, you do NOT need a nomination for NAPS or Foundation.

If you are at NAPS or a Foundation school, you do need a nom to get into USNA. However, if you don't acquire one on your own (and successfully complete the program), you'll be given a SecNav nom.

Many accepted for NAPS/Foundation do in fact have noms; however, those appointed to NAPS or offered Foundation do not count as appointments against their source of noms -- b/c they have not been accepted to USNA this year.

Thank you. Is a nomination need to get on the waiting list? That's another thing I've heard conflicting things about.

USNA 1985:

I guess I'm confused here.

Why does OPNAVINST 420.1B from the Chief of Naval Operations which I believe is still a standing order state that the pathway to commissioning through NAPS and USNA leads from nomination through Admissions to NAPS and then the USNA EXCEPT for current enlisted Regular Navy and Naval Reserve personnel who do not need normal congressional, Vice Presidential or Superintendent's nominations for NAPS consideration?

I had offer for foundation prior to receiving a congressional nomination. For those wondering, 25 offers for foundation have been issued with an expected total of 50 for 2014. I was also informed by Admissions, B&G, and Foundation that direct admission was still on the table and increased greatly due to subsequent nom and would override foundation contract. Was also informed that most offered naps and foundation this year were fully qualified but due to competitiveness, lack of nom, and above average stats of pool this year may not gain admission but possess operational/leadership traits desirable to USNA hence why they were given a ticket via naps/foundation.
