This afternoon our DS received an email from his BGO that he was not going to receive an appointment to the USNA, we have told our DS that it's not official until the TWE arrives but suggested he forward the email to his Admission counselor. Has anyone ever been notified like this?

Well...

I think if you email the admission counselor the BGO could get some push back for the academy.

Check back on your post from some other BGO's before sending that email.
 
This guy gave you valuable info you could act upon. Was he supposed to? No. However, I bet he's a good guy who has been through the process many times so be grateful he gave you a heads up.

Morgan04, Would your reaction had been the same if the BGO instead had emailed saying a BFE was in your DS future? Though he probably shouldn't have said anything, I wouldn't go shooting the messenger.
 
If the BGO called with that news, s/he was following our standard procedures.
 
I agree there is no reason to forward the email to Admissions. Not sure if BGO is permitted to inform early but, in any case, if the answer is a TWE, Admissions already knows b/c they made the decision. So sending them the email only serves to POSSIBLY get the BGO "in trouble" for notifying you in advance of the letter, which I'm sure he did with all of the best motives.

You are correct that nothing is official until you receive the official snail mail notification from USNA but I would proceed with Plan B and see what comes in the mail.
 
We have no intention of getting our BGO is any type of trouble as he has been very helpful. I have seen on so many of the postings in other threads advising to contact the admissions office, to have them confirm. No other purpose than to hear it straight from them.

I promise you'll hear directly from Admissions NLT April 15. If the BGO's information is correct, the TWE is already on its way.

Another poster recently stated he/she had contacted Admissions. Based on that post, if you contact Admissions, they will likely not tell you your status on the phone and instead tell you that you will receive notification by mail.
 
^^^ I agree. USNA admissions is the one who makes the determination, not the BGO, so forwarding an email back to admissions seems like a waste of time. As mentioned in other posts, BGO's are NOT supposed to jump the gun and inform candidates of their status ahead of the official notification by USNA.
 
BGOs are not allowed to initially notify candidates of their appointment status, especially when it results in a TWE. MOCs or USNA should be their first notification, whether positive or negative.
 
The BGO for my son is also his NJROTC commander and we requested and the BGO wanted to be the one to tell my son the bad news if he found out before he received a TWE. The BGO, a USNA Alum, has known our son for 4 years so we could care less what protocol was/is, my son wanted to hear it from someone he highly respects. It was bad news and the TWE followed about a week later.

Do BGO's know if their candidate is going to get an appt. before the candidate is told? I've heard several different answers. Today DS BGO responded to an email requesting info about his application and said if he has a chance this year if will be NAPS and he should have Plan B ready to go in case. He also said if it comes to that he would work with DS on a plan for next year.

So are we now to assume DS is out of the running? Does the BGO know what the outcome is or is he just giving us a scenario? So confused!
 
We're in TX-22 and admissions said DS notification had been mailed (no indication of good or bad) and would be rec'd in 4/5 business days. That was 3/19...Gig 'em! DS did not seem too affected about the likely TWE. I think the not knowing was the hard part...Plan B wavered as Plan A from time to time and is now Plan A. Resilience is key. Now he's been having a good time enjoying the last of his Spring Break. Now Dad has to break the forum habit...DS never acquired it...DS waited patiently all the way...not sure how. :D
 
DS plan B will be the Corps at A&M too but still wants to wait to commit until he gets the envelope from USNA ...whatever size it may be.
 
Great point, at this stage of the game the not knowing is easily the hardest part.

BTW, the 2017 Naval academy class valedictorian was from Cedar park Texas, Hook 'em!

BGOs do not know about appointments before candidates; we usually learn of them about a week after the candidate does. BGOs MAY learn of a potential turndown before it goes out. However, we are not permitted to inform candidates because, occasionally, the status will change before the TWE actually goes out. Nonetheless, some BGOs still inform their candidates, which we aren't supposed to do.

It could well be, in the case of the OP, that the BGO contacted Admissions and requested to be allowed to share the info. I can't speak to that particular situation but, for others out there, PLEASE DO NOT ASK YOUR BGO ABOUT A POTENTIAL TWE. It puts him/her in a very awkward position and will not change the outcome. Not only that, there are many candidates for whom no official decision has been made (I have several of those). So, if those candidates contacted me, I wouldn't have anything to tell them other than to keep waiting.

Finally, as to the question above, there are quite a few potential scenarios. I've sent you a PM.

^^^ Had a candidate this year who looked to be getting the TWE and 2 weeks later it changed to a NAPS offer. USNA1985 is correct; things change, please don't ask your BGO about the candidate's status.
 
Some days, it's painful not revealing a candidate's status as I've had a couple who call, e-mail, text, etc. Oftentimes I'll hear of a candidate's plan "B" has come through and I'm thrilled for them.

On my candidate Facebook page, I'll receive PM's from parents asking about the status of their kid. Some of them from within SAC. Well, all of you should know soon and perhaps my Facebook PM's will shrink to less than 100 by the end of April! :big grin:
