DS got notified that he is going out for a sub cruise (and all plans are subject to change). Anybody have any experiences with sub cruises the last couple of years? DS did the Minnesota two hour tour this fall and I am hoping that they put out to sea for more than a couple of days.

Of course, a few days is better than none as I heard that in the past some cruises never left the dock

Also, anybody hear what your mid is doing this summer? I think assignments are starting to come out...

as of last night -no word for bandad's ds' company mate

summer sub sounds cool though.

Yeap you are subject to a ship's schedule. I learned that ships that had less Mids tended to almost be better experiences. It usually allowed alot more opportunities to do different things as they just aren't cycling folks through things. The best advice I can give to anyone going on summer cruise is proactive. Ask to do things, ask to observe, ask to participate. That tends to lead to more opportunities than anything.

summer sub sounds cool though. when I asked DS how his first semester grades went, he answered, "good news, no subs for me"...so I doubt he got that as well

Vista and Hoops,

I gotta say, if you are in a Varsity or Club sport, I think GPA is a little different. Everyone thinks of football, and that is gotta be tough, but baseball/basketball/softball/hockey, etc, having practices/games during the week, weekends, and nights... travel, missed classes, etc. I cannot imagine.

DS did pretty well first semester, but it is not where you start, it is where and how you finish. DS, unfortunately related to me, did not inherit any athletic ability from me. And if he had, I would bet his grades first semester would be just a wee bit lower, at least.

Having an Eng degree from a state school, I did OK but I really had no other responsibility except fun. I really have to take my hat off to the kids that do a varsity/club sport and graduate with a solid GPA, especially from a SA.

Vista - congrats to your younger son on the AROTC scholarship and will it be HS graduation or Herndon??? If your going to Herndon, we need to get some of the parents from our DS's Co's Plebes together. My better half and I plan to be there. If you have graduation you have graduation, but we were kinda hoping ya'll would be there too.

Hi Bandad and Bandmom,
The sports is T*U*F*F . His season is long. they start sept. 1st and ended last wk. Two days ago they got their spring team assignments. They practice every day and because it is off campus they have to take a shuttle there so door-to-door is over three hours. Often actual games start at 10:45 PM (that is not a typo) I have suggested quitting but he looks at me with an expression that is 1/3 irritated, 1/3 wounded and 1/3 mad. He also chose a hard major. DS did say that the other plebes who chose that major are glad DS chose it because he will 'bring the curve down'

He did get his summer assignments--no subs ;)

I wont make actual Herndon (Bummer) --too many other kids here that still require parenting...but I should make it a couple days later-to help move DS' meager supplies to his sponsor's house and visit before he leaves on his summer cruise.

A parent gathering sounds perfect!

Just a heads-up - you will be stunned at the amount of "stuff" your mid will have accumulated the first year! I actually chuckled at the idea of "meager supplies" - they arrive plebe summer with only a backpack, but they are issued so much over plebe summer and throughout the year - I am amazed that they fit it all in!

DD got what she wanted: Block 0 cruise (still tbd where); Block 1 NASS Detail; Block 2 leave; Block 3 mandatory sports camp.

Good to know...I'll bring our bigger vehicle ;)

DD did a cruise on the Rhode Island a couple of summers ago. There were 5-6 other Mids and a mentor (female) officer. She was transported from Kings Bay out to RI while it was on patrol. Spent 22 days aboard then it surfaced and they disembarked. While interesting, there were plenty of times when little or nothing was being done. She really enjoyed the experience, had high praise for the ship’s crew, but it convinced her that going subs was not for her.

I think I know what "surface" is but does anyone know what "Cadet Field Training at USMA" is? DS did a pre-screener and then a full day screener to get it and is excited for the assignment but in the six word texts that I get from him -he doesn't say what it is...

Not 100% positive, but I think this is a 3-4 field training program that all Sophomores (Yearlings) do for their summer training held at Camp Buckner by West Point? I believe the new Firsties serve in the Leadership roles for this training. I believe it is a follow on to their Plebe Year field training, so probably more land nav, obstables courses, hikes, patrolling, field operations, squad (possiblye platoon) tactics. I believe the culminating event is the run back to West Point. Hope I am not off the mark. I am sure USNA does a screener to ensure they are sending top Mids who not only want to learn more field training, but are physically prepared for it.

DS just texted that 1st block is unassigned. What does that mean or what will happen next??

Thanks

Bring a big, big, big vehicle with a roof compartment to bring all their first year stuff home. It is a lot.

1st block leave. He can choose to fill it with summer school; otherwise it's his time.

It's the same training all USMA 3/C cadets go through for their second summer. Maybe a question to ask the USMA forum if you're interested in more details.

It's part of a group of training opportunities known as "Marine Corps Special Opportunities Training" (MARSOT) that allows midshipmen to attend Army and Marine Corps training schools for their Professional Development summer training requirement.

What do those that live across the country do with all their "stuff"?

USNA offers summer storage for all Midshipmen. More delicate or valuable items can be stored at a sponsor's house.

It shouldn't be too much stuff. Most of it (textbooks, excess uniforms) should go to summer storage.

Is it bad or negative in any way if the USNA didn't assign him something for 1st block?

It's normal. All mids get two blocks of training (one block of fleet cruise/PROTRAMID and one block of professional development) and one block of leave. Some 3/C had two blocks of leave last year due to lack of funding (and thus only went on a fleet cruise), but as far as I know that won't happen this year.

The leave block is the one that is not listed in MIDS. In this case, it means that he has leave from graduation until around the 20th of June. The dates are not set in stone; they're subject to the whimsy of ships' schedules and the training department.

nuensis,

I may have explained this wrong...........1st block unassigned, 2nd block surface cruise, 3rd block leave.

Does this change your answer at all?

Thank You!
