If you recieve a TWE . . . Are you fully rejected? Put on a wait list? Considered for an appointment if someone declines offer? Or will you just have to suck it up and apply next year?

I think as long as it is not specifically calling out the recipient to be on the wait list, one is done for this year.

Well.....we got the dreaded TWE here in southern california. I know we join many other qualified candidates who have not made the cut. The DS is very quiet but i know he will rebound. He has a solid plan B in place with an appointment to the US Merchant Marine Academy in hand and other options still pending. I am still here with you folks so keep us all posted on the goings on today. You have all been lifesavers in this crazy process.

A TWE is the end of the road for this year.

A WL letter (which also comes as a TWE but has different wording) provides some hope. Assuming they do a WL this year, as they have in past years, those letters tend to arrive in April.

Eventually, every WL person will either receive a BFE or a true TWE -- just later in the process.

questions for usna1985 moderator

this question is for usna1985, I thought that if you got a twe but were offered a spot in naps that that information came in the same twe, is that correct? And if ds received 2 nominations, 1 congressional and 1 rotc and he didn't get the congressional appointment does he still have a chance with the rotc nomination?

No - a NAPS appt I am pretty sure comes in a BFE only to NAPS instead of direct appointment.

My understanding is that once you receive a TWE, you are no longer in the running for NAPS/Foundation. Candidates selected for those programs are notified by Admissions that they have been recommended for those programs -- at least via email -- and then get follow up hard copy documentation. Not sure if there is a BFE for NAPS but I'm quite sure the recommendation to these programs does not come after a TWE.

If you've received a TWE, it means that you will not be offered an appointment period -- to USNA, NAPS or Foundation, regardless of the number of noms you have. USNA has considered all of your noms (e.g., MOC, Pres, ROTC) and still decided to send the TWE. It also means that, if someone on your MOC's slate, or someone with an ROTC nom, turns down their appointment, it won't be offered to you. That's what the wait list is for -- those folks are still in the game.

Based on what I've repeatedly been told by Admissions, a TWE is the end of the road for this year. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Did want to add that, if someone didn't receive the MOC appointment but has NOT yet received a TWE, he/she is still eligible for an appointment. It's not over until you get the TWE and then it truly is over.

What is the actual content of a TWE? I'm just curious....

It is a Tiny White Envelope that contains a letter stating a person is not competitive enough to receive an offer to the Service Academy or its Prep School. And basically states to reapply next year.

Just to clarify, MOC stands for Member of Congress. They issue NOMS. Only USNA offers appointments. To be in the running for an appointment, candidates have to be 3Q and have a NOM. Those offered NAPS are only 2Q (lacking the scholastic Q).

USNA makes the determination of who gets offered NAPS during their admissions review process.

If you get the TWE, your journey for this year has ended as mentioned above. In prior years where USNA had a 'wait list', individuals were specifically told that but were not told exactly where on the list they were.

I don't know if USNA has a wait list this year.
