If you have scores with brackets?

On the portal it states: **Scores with brackets ("<>") may not be competitive for the Academy. Does that mean, if I have a <24> in science, and my other scores are higher and don't have brackets, that the 24 would affect my application too bad? I know I don't have a chance for an appointment, but would it affect my chances for prep school or foundation?

Yeah you need all scores with out parentheses to become a candidate and appointment

That is not necessarily true. You could have brackets around one section (Say SAT Math) but have a qualifying score in math under ACT. Thus the SAT math score would not count since the ACT math score is higher.....

You need either all your SAT scores above minimum with no brackets, or you need all ACT scores above with no brackets. For example I took the ACT and totally messed up taking it and had a few brackets on my portal once the scores came in. Then I took the SAT four times and got some nice scores and on my portal had no brackets in my SAT section.

My example:

SAT Verbal/Critical Reading: 620
SAT Math: 690
SAT Writing: 570
ACT English: <20>**
ACT Math: 26
ACT Reading: <21>**
ACT SR: <22>**
ACT Combined English/Writing: 21

So as long as you have one section in the clear your good. I was appointed on the 13th of march.

As long as your app says "Candidate", there's still hope.

TWEs have been sent to some at least...

Still waiting here too, but more than happy with my AFROTC scholarship!

But there is no science portion on SAT. So does that mean they really only look at English and Math whether it's ACT or SAT? How do they make the test equivalent, when there is four parts on ACT and two on SAT? Plus they both test differently.

I had brackets arpund one pf my SAT parts and ive already acxepted an appointemnt so i guess it is permissible

Dude, I'm in the same predicament ..

These are my test scores directly from my portal:

Test Scores:
SAT Verbal/Critical Reading: 590
SAT Math: <550>**
SAT Writing: 550
ACT English: 30
ACT Math: 26
ACT Reading: <23>**
ACT SR: <24>**
ACT Combined English/Writing: 27

Obviously, science and reading are problem areas. I should've retaken it, but eh, it is what it is.

I'm in the same boat here! ACT: 34 Reading, 32 English, 29 SR, <21>** Math. It is what it is and I'll make the best out of whatever happens, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed! Maybe prep? Who knows. As always, best of luck everyone!

Your file is almost exactly the same as mine.

I originally had a <23>**SR on my portal. It still classified me as a candidate even when I didn't have a nomination. My SAT scores were all above par. Since then, I have brought everything up to competitive level.

It is possible to get in with brackets

Not the greatest scores, but enlisted service helped out. I do wish I would have known and been looking to get into USAFA in high school so I would given more effort.

GPA: 3.57
Class Rank: 14
Class Size: 192

Test Scores:
SAT Verbal/Critical Reading: <550>**
SAT Math: 780
SAT Writing: 550
ACT English: 29
ACT Math: 34
ACT Reading: <23>**
ACT SR: 27
ACT Combined English/Writing: 26

Your math is almost perfect! Congrats on the appointment!

That also helped. They said you use math a lot, and that it might make up for my reading score, but even so I didn't get accepted my first year. If they do not accept you, apply as many times as possible whether enlisted or civilian if this is what you want.

My reading score had brackets last year (didn't receive an appointment) but got the Falcon Foundation scholarship. Research that because you may be the perfect candidate for that (I was). So happy I accepted it. I just got my appointment a year later... gained a lot of wisdom and appreciation in that time; It was the best for me.

Also, you may still get an appointment. Keep your head up, press forward.
