DS received email notifying him he was awarded a 4 year AROTC scholarship to RPI and WPI. He is waitlisted on both schools. Also won AFROTC 4 year type 7 scholarship (school not specified).
Should DS contact Admissions at those schools? Would the scholarship take him off the waiting list, or do we look for another school to transfere scholarship to... I have read somewhere that transfers drop scholarship from 4 to 3 years... Anyone in a similar situation?

I'm in the exact same situation, but at JMU. I am working with the ROO at JMU to see if they will accept me. If not, my next step is going to be to try and get my scholarship transferred to a college I was accepted to.

In my opinion, I think your son should contact those schools. My son won a scholarship to RPI, Texas A&M, and I believe the University of Florida. At that time, he hadn't received an acceptance to any of those schools.

He contacted A&M. The admissions department said that they didn't consider scholarships. However, he was accepted the following week. He never did contact RPI, but ended up being accepted after he won the scholarship. I think he withdrew his Florida application or never finished it, but they called him as soon as he got the scholarship.

Anyway, we do not know if his scholarship had anything to do with him being accepted, but it doesn't hurt to make some contacts at the school in which he wants to attend and call attention to his desire to go there and let them know about the scholarship.

Hi casnmas,

I would love to know more about that 4 yr drop to 3 yr thing, too. I have never seen anything that said that, but I did see one mom post last year that that is what happened to them when their transfer was approved.

Any posters with more authoritative info on this, please post! We are in the midst of considering requesting transfer, too.

Hi! Congrats on your scholarships!! I'm currently in AFROTC at WPI so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Assuming the story is accurate, and I have no reason to doubt it, I expect the real reason wasn't the transfer per se. It was probably due to a transfer to a more expensive school. Just my surmise though and it doesn't necessarily always happen. Last year, with the sequester, was a pretty rough year for scholarships.

Information on portals in minimal... DS won AFROTC type 7 scholarship (4 year) in addition to 4 year AROTC... there is wording USAF site about converting it to type 2 (3 years). Waiting on paperwork with more answers. DS state school is tuition is $857, fees are $5800, if type 7 (AFROTC) only covers tuition, then it is not much help... type 2 covers tuition+most fees.. still trying to figure out what AROTC 4year includes and if they have similar converting options...

Are you there on AFROTC scholarship? 4 year? My DS has AROTC scholarship but is waitlisted, he is going to contact ROTC office. Does WPI supplement housing for ROTC program?

Yes, I'm on a 4 year AFROTC scholarship. WPI pays for room and board which is great. Yes, definitely contact the AFROTC detachment - they'll do whatever they can to help you. I bet Army ROTC will do the same. Let me know if you have any more questions about WPI etc. What is your son planning on majoring in? Has he visited yet? Sometimes we get prospective cadets and let them sit in on a LLAB or something to get a feel for our program. I can give you contact information if you PM me :)

All AFROTC scholarships pay tuition AND fees, plus stipend and book money and language pay if you take language classes too (just for contracted cadets), just need to submit a short form and final grade in the class.

I am on a type 7 scholarship and AFROTC pays for all my tuition and fees save my parking pass. An AROTC scholarship would cover tuition and fees as well, only difference is that for AROTC you can chose to use it for room and board instead if you want to.

Since WPI covers room and board for ROTC cadets your DS would be fully covered by either scholarship if it is instate for you.

Are you at a state school? I need to find out if the AROTC has a dollar cap...WPI tuition alone is $40,000+, AFROTC type 7 seems to have a cap limited to in state public school number... in the example above that would be $6800?

Wow, didn't think it was that much. I go to a top 5 engineering school and my tuition and fees are waaay under the $18,000 cap for instate so I never had to question if the type 7 would cover that. Your best bet would be to call AFROTC HQ to talk to your DS's scholarship technician or to call the AFROTC detachment at WPI, they could tell you if the type 7 would cover all of it or just partially. The cap for a type 2 is $18,000 and I think it is also the cap for type 7s, but I could be wrong, the wording does say that it takes care of instate tuition and fees. I thought that the $6800 you stated earlier was the entire cost of tution + fees for a semester. Never heard of WPI so I didn't realize it was a private school and those have their own special rules scholarship wise.

It really would be best to call the school Monday if they are not on spring break and talk to a rep from the detachment. If they don't know off the top of their head they can go find out for you. If you can't get in touch with them AFROTC HQ will have a definite answer for you if you call them. My technician was great, I had a lot of questions and he got back to me within 1-2 hours if he didn't know something.

Edit:

Probably the best person on here to answer that specific question would be afrotc16, they said that they go to the school you're looking at and are on scholarship. Might want to send afrotc16 a pm.

Thank you for the response... DS is going to reach out to ROTC detachment and admissions at both schools, was your son waitlisted, or did he just not receive acceptance letter yet?

Will do...Feedback is greatly appreciated.

He had not received acceptance letters at the time he won the scholarship. He had to make a decision before RPI released their decisions. He decided to only contact A&M and if he wasn't able to get in, he was going to contact RPI. He got in a week after contacting A&M. It may have been a coincidence to get accepted so soon after contacting the school, but they had his application since October. When RPI released their decisions, he was accepted. Winning the scholarship to their school may have played a part, which is why I think it's a good idea to contact the school.

Good luck! My opinion is that it will probably help.

My Son just got awarded a 4 yr Tier 1 MO- NROTC at Boston U but he is in the waiting list. He was accepted in George Washington U with a merit scholarship.I want to know if it is possible to transfer the scholarship. Thanks if anyone could give us your thoughts.

Doesn't hurt to try. Never any guarantees. Be sure you understand whether its a host or affiliated college. The NROTC web site will tell you. The other alternative at Boston U is to call the cadre and see if they can help to get him in off the waiting list, or call admissions and let them know you have the scholarship. If could make a difference there.

Most importantly CONGRATULATIONS! Semper Fi! :thumb:

No longer waitlisted!!!

DS was awarded 4 year AROTC scholarship to WPI and RPI , however was on the waitlist at both these schools :frown:. DS followed the advice here and hit the ground running contacting admissions and the AROTC attachments at both schools this weekend. He got feed back within minutes from WPI AROTC with info on who to contact. RPI emailed today informing him his status was changed to accepted. WPI AROTC emailed today and said acceptance was eminent... Thanks everyone for the advice. DS needs to verify fine print, but both school indicated that room and board are picked up by the school...very nice. Now he has the nice problem of deciding where to go. Any feed back from current of past AROTC cadets at either school would be appreciated.

That's great!

One thing that may help him decide:
WPI has a significantly different way of organizing academic classes than most other colleges. We have 4 terms (quarters) per year and take 3 classes (plus ROTC) every term. In junior year, students complete an interactive qualifying project (IQP) and in senior year, students complete their major qualifying project (MQP). One thing which is notable is that most students have a chance to do their IQP abroad, which is an opportunity that not many engineering students get. I'd recommend looking more on the website. Have you visited either school?
