I was looking into joining the military as a veterinarian. I am currently preparing to take the GRE and begin the application process to veterinarian schools? Do any of you guys know if there is a scholarship similar to the Army and Navy Medical Corps Scholarship? Or would I just have to enter after OCS?

this is sort of a quiet corner of the forum, so you may wish to re-post under the general ROTC area for more replies, but I found this googling:
http://vetopportunities.amedd.army.mil/
it gives some further contact info. and I imagine they would have scholarship info (if any). It appears to be a small group (400) in the Army. Prob similar size in AF and Navy/Marines.

I'm taking the same path, being a Army veterinarian, but I'm just beginning my pre-vet degree. Vets don't go through OCS. It's a direct commissioning program. After you complete vet school you commission and go to OBS/OBC (I forget what the Army Vet I talked to called it)...it's an officers basic course, not a candidate school. As for scholarships I know the Army has the HPSP program for vets. It cover the last two or three years of vet school if I remember correctly.

I may be mistaken, but I don't think the other branches have veterinarians. Every veterinarian I have seen in the armed forces was an Army Vet. And yes, it's a direct commission. They have a pretty interesting mission. It's not just treating animals. I think you'll be surprised as to what they do.

You chose a quiet corner to post. Its called AMEDD BOLC. Yes, everything I've read in this thread is accurate to the VC. When the VC aren't taking care of large and small animals, they're food inspectors (the source, not the eateries). You are also correct about HPSP. The only caution I would give about HPSP is qualification DOES NOT equal acceptance. If you're placing all your eggs in one basket (especially as an ROTC cadet), you might be in for a rude awakening. Ed delays in conjunction with HPSPs are rare (especially in a low density corps during a draw down), but I wish you the best of luck.
