Regretfully my ds was not offered an AROTC scholarship this year. Wow, what a long wait. He applied in early September. Wondering if you all could shed some light as to whether there may be scholarships still available for the upcoming school year? His 2 top choices are Citadel and VT Corps of Cadets.

Perhaps the Citadel and VT would be the best people to ask that question to. I would tell you that competing for a scholarship to an SMC is going to make it harder than normal, but obviously that's what your son is looking for. Have your son contact the schools for the definitive answer to your question.

Will do. Applying to 7 schools and being accepted to all seven is impressive. He worked his but off and does want to commission as an officer some day.

I know a lot of people who weren't chosen for a scholarship. The Citadel is where I will be next year. The ROTC units on campus offer 2 and 3 year scholarships. They are basically the same as the ROTC scholarships except you have to apply when you get on campus. I know a Navy Lt who applied and didn't get a scholarship. However, when he got on campus (The Citadel), he took out loans to pay for the first year, and got a campus-based scholarship for the next 3 years. The Citadel also offers several scholarships for upperclassman. Financial aid is also available through the federal government. You can get a pell grant that covers about $5,500 per year and low-interest loans are available that your ds doesn't have to pay till after he/she graduate. Low-interest loans are also available for parents through the federal government. Good luck!

Congrats on your scholarship. I'm sure if he decides Citadel, he will apply again next year.

There is no application process for an AROTC Battalion Scholarship, cadets just show up, enroll in AROTC and start their freshman year. The battalion will evaluate the non scholarship cadets, they will be placed on a battalion OML (Order of Merit List), the battalion will offer scholarships (if any are available) starting at the top of the list.

The best thing a cadet can do is start the year strong, get great grades and a very high APFT, grades being the most important. Participate fully in AROTC and put themselves in the best position they can to be selected for a scholarship if available.

NROTC has an official National application process for campus Side Load Scholarships, AROTC is handled by the battalion with no formal application.

Best of luck to your son.
