Thought this might get a few laughs... I'm going to be a part of the Class of 2018. My dad is a Master Sergeant in the Air National Guard, and I told him yesterday, "Dad, when I graduate, you're going to have to salute me." He said "Nope, I'm retiring before then."
 
Both my dad and my stepdad are army and ive already told whats gonna happen. I said im just gonna stand there and stare until they salute if theyre in uniform or not lol
 
Proud to Salute

I'm retired MSgt and my DS is an appointee for class of 2018. I will gladly salute him when he graduates. We're so proud!
 
Hahahaha! I'm right with you, girl. My mom is a former sailor and my dad is a Marine! Both enlisted!! This is going to be so fun =D
 
Alyssa and everyone else with military parents, remember they can give the oath, and by doing so they will have no option, but to salute you. Than again be prepared to hand them a silver dollar because that is the tradition for the 1st salute by a lower ranking member.

I think the Oath can only be administered by a commissioned officer and not an enlisted member.

The Oath is given by a commissioned officer, but the 1st salute can be with an enlisted or formally enlisted person of your choosing.
 
First salute

Let me just try to get this straight. After the oath is given by a commissioned officer, those 2nd Lieutenant shoulder boards are then put in by the parents on each shoulder. Once this is completed, i remember backing up a bit and making my first salute (being a former AF enlisted). My cadet then salutes back and then the unforgettable bear hug that you felt was never ever going to end. (ala tiger woods with his dad when he first won the masters). Oh yes, i very much still cherish that day!!

Yes, I went to my AFROTC detachment's commissioning ceremony last year and they were commissioned by an officer (if their parent was an officer they could commission them) and they either had an enlisted family member or the detachment NCO give them their first salute. Haha those NCOs must have so many silver dollars by now :p.

And I bet they treasure each one. Cadets and midshipmen don't often make the choice of who will give their first salute lightly.
