Next step after receiving scholarship?

My daughter was awarded a four year AROTC scholarship recently. We are so thrilled for her. Does anyone know what the next step is? I know there is a medical exam that has to be completed. Where do we go to do that and are there forms we take with us?

Thanks

Step 1 is accept the scholarship.
Step 2 is wait for snail mail or check the downloads section of the portal for a letter describing the steps for DoDMERB.

Your daughter will be receiving a packet soon that includes the official award letter. There will be instructions on how to accept the scholarship and the deadlines. There will also be information regarding Dodmerb, she will be receiving information soon on how to log in, create an account, and set up the required appointments, it's pretty easy to follow.

The first step will be accepting the scholarship, she has 30 days from the award letter date to accept or decline, make sure she does this at least a week before the deadline to make sure everything is received by Cadet Command.

After she accepts the scholarship she might want to email the ROO at the school she selects to let them know she has sent her acceptance.

Every battalion handles things differently, my son's battalion sent paperwork over the summer to fill out prior to arriving at school. The largest form she will have to complete will be the 104-R, this form outlines classes for the entire four years of school so the Army can see that she will graduate in four years, she will need to have conversations with her new college advisor to get some help filling this out. Don't worry too much about this form, they understand that classes will change over each semester, they are just looking for a plan they can start with. There will be other forms such as Direct Deposit, Tax forms, and a bunch of others. The Battalion will help her navigate these forms.

If she has the opportunity to fill these out before school starts make sure she gets them done, this will help her to get the contract signed as early as possible assuming she passes the first APFT. This way she will start to receive the monthly stipend. No money is released until the contract is signed and the stipend payments are not retroactive.

For now there is nothing to do but wait until the packet arrives in the mail.

Congratulations to your daughter.

First off congrats to your DD. Welcome to the world of an AROTC parent. In addition to what Jcleppe and kinnem said I would have her print and start the SF-86 form used for security clearances. It needs to be completed upon arrival and is much easier to do at home as there is a lot if info that your DD may not have commited to memory. Other than that find the youtube links that show the proper PU,SU forms. Best of luck.

The battalion required new cadets to complete the security clearance forms prior to arriving? Both my sons just filled them out after they had been there a while, these forms are not part of those required for contracting. Interesting how much battalions can be different.

She will be able to accept the scholarship once she receives the packet in the mail? How long does it typically take for the packet to come in the mail?

Thank you Sherrif3. As I said we are thrilled for her. She has already talked to her ROO at her school. She sent him a message as soon as she saw winner on her portal. We want to make sure she can get her acceptance in for the scholarship and I have been watching the mail this week but so far nothing has come.

MORE QUESTIONS:

104-R: If this form is done prior to freshman year, do they just call their advisor and do it over the phone? Do they turn in a new form each time it changes? I would imagine a significant amount of changes.

Direct Deposit: for USNA son there were pretty much two choices that were strongly encouraged. I think army son is eligible for Navy Federal Credit Union. On the other hand the only ATM on campus is Bank of America. Any thoughts?

Tax Forms: We didnt claim our USNA plebe this year. I assume we wont claim our MS1 next year. accurate?

TIA

I can tell you how it went with my sons at their school/battalion, both went to the same school.

As far as the 104-R, both completed the form by talking with their advisor through phone calls and email. They told them what they needed and the advisor sent them a sample of what was required, for electives they just picked from the catalog. Make sure to ask how the university handles the MS classes and what they give credit for. My son's school gives 1 credit for MS1 classes, 2 credits for MS2 classes and 3 credits for MS3 and 4 classes, they also give 1 credit for each PT, Lab, Color Guard, and Ranger Challenge. Not all schools do this, make sure you check because these classes can be used to fill electives.

Depending on the Major, the MS classes may count as a Related Field, this will help lessen the class load.

You are right, the 104-R is a living document, I can tell you that the classes my older son ended up taking looked very little like the original 104-R. My son's battalion has a HR person that monitors each cadet's 104-R and Degree Audit to make sure they are on track. Changes in classes are not a big deal, they may have him update the 104-R from time to time, it's a quick and easy process. The only difficulty comes if a cadet wants to change their major to one that is not in their current ADM class, example, switching from Engineering to History, this requires approval from Brigade and CC.

Basically they just want an outline that shows the cadet will be able to graduate if 4 years, unless they are approved for longer for certain majors.

Both my sons just had the direct deposit go into their own account, B of A happened to be the account, any bank is fine.

As far as taxes go, it is different then a student at an Academy, you'll need to talk to your accountant about this.

@Vista

As far as banking use whats convenient. My son has a credit union account here. There are ATMs on campus for another credit union. Most credit unions do not charge fees for ATM use to access an account from other credit unions.

As far as taxes, if you are picking up room and board and DS is home in the summers, etc. then you should still claim him as a dependent on your taxes. So this presupposes you are using the scholarship for tuition. If the entire ride is somehow covered, then you'll need to go through the math to figure out if you're providing more than 50% of his support, including spending money, clothes etc., but excluding tuition.

If he has income of his own from summer jobs, you can still claim him as a dependent (assuming you still can) as long as his income doesn't exceed a certain amount ($7,500?). On his tax return he would not claim himself as a dependent because you took that deduction. He should still be able to get most of his with-holding back though. Also, the stipend does not count as income so that helps.

Clear as mud, right? Welcome to America's tax code.

Thank you Kinnem
extremely helpful as always..

National Scholarship covers 4 yr tuition +stipend, but school tosses in room, board and activity fees. I think given the dates when school starts, we will go over the the 1/2 yr mark so can possibly claim one more yr but that will be it.... (no complaints here!)

I will take your advice and stick with a local bank because of the atm.

so, any tips on boots? son is thinking Rocky S2V.....

We received our packet yesterday, so hopefully yours will come soon too!

Question regarding the SF-86...our packet says to go online and print this out. Do they return it with the acceptance letter or take it with them to the school or should I ask someone at Cadet Command? LOL

Unless told otherwise the SF-86 should be completed and given to your cadre upon arrival at school this fall. The form is long and somewhat a pain in the butt if your child has done much traveling.

Thanks everyone for responding and for all the help. Congratulations to everyone. We got the official scholarship letter yesterday and emailed it today. We are also putting it in the mail. My DD was so excited to finally get the letter. Does anyone know how long until we can get her medical, DODMERD done?
