All right fellow SAF friends......I'm tripping right now. I have lived in SO CAL my entire 51 years and have been through several big quakes....no big deal

However, I am totally freaking out over a itsy bitsy teeny weenie 2.7 quake that happened at 3:05 pacific time. I heard a single loud BANG like something hit my house or exploded under it, but did not feel a single shake.

Rushed outside to find (and meet for the first time) a bunch of my neighbors who experienced the same thing as I did.

Just learned that this itsy bitsy teeny weenie quake 's epicenter was basically RIGHT UNDERNEATH my house -..give or take 1/4-1/2 mile.... according to the USGS.gov web site...

Close enough to right underneath my house...

Be careful of what you ask for....I was hoping for something to get my mind of of EA's.....this almost worked...

It has only been 91 years since the big Long Beach earthquake (6.7).

Hope there wasn't too much cracking from the event. Earthquakes are truly local events with the bulk of the damage happening within a couple miles of a significant quake. Five miles away and you wouldn't have even noticed.

I have a sister and BIL about 3 miles from the epicenter. Didn't hear a thing from them if the gives you an idea of how local that quake was.

I believe it. My neighborhood is mostly single story homes with a mixture of old people and Long Beach State students. Everybody who came out of their house alongside of me thought as I did that their house had been struck by something.
I've never before been in an earthquake that had a single jolt with such a loud boom....but then again I've never been so close to the epicenter...which ended up being 1 mile to the SE of the epicenter not the 1/4 -1/2 miles that I first guestimated. Still way to close for comfort for somebody who until today had absolutely no fear of earthquakes.....and is now thinking about moving TO Dodge...

Wow you were really close to the epicenter. I'm glad it wasn't a major one.
I'm a fellow Southern Californian as well so I've experienced a handful of earthquakes myself (thankfully not any big ones).
I did not feel the earthquake today.

The best example for a slip fault that I have seen is a brick on a board attached to a bungie cord. If you pull the cord sometimes the brick slides in small increments, but every once in a while it holds in place and jumps forward in a big leap. You my friend, were on top of a leap.

So that would be the reason for the single jolt as opposed to the continuous rocking and shaking would normally indicate to me "earthquake". I have NEVER "heard" an earthquake before and like I mentioned earlier..I have lived in SO CAL my entire 51 years....

I have lived in So Cal and am now in the Upper SF Bay Area in Nor Cal. The difference is the way the earth moved. If you take two rough object like sand blocks and rub them across you can feel the vibration if you do it quickly it is a louder event with less "humm".

OK....that was a good one

I rocked and rolled with this last earthquake....5.3 thank goodness it wasn't centered under my house....

This was one of the longest shakes I have felt in over 20 years

Come to AZ. No quakes or tornadoes. Can you handle 115 degree days back to back? Don't worry it's a dry heat. :)

hopefull for all

I LOVE Arizona! I used to spend most of my Holidays at Lake Havasu. I find that lack of need to layer one's clothes is a great motivator to keep one's hand out of the cookie jar!

Very true. You don't get to hide in baggy clothes to much of the year.

hopefull for all

Lots of earthquake activity in Long Beach recently. Shook our home too!
