Question abt US citizen living in Canada

Hello all,

I'm a freshman in high school and ever since the 2nd grade it has been my dream to attend a service academy and serve my country. When I was the 5th grade, I moved away to Canada. However, I was born in California and lived there until I moved away. I'm currently in high school as I said earlier and will be attending a high school in Canada by the time I apply to any of the service academies. Although I am living in Canada, my dad owns a house in California (District 15). Am I still eligible to apply for a nomination from the CA-15 rep? Also, because I live in Canada there isn't prestigious ECA's like NHS or JROTC. What would you recommend for me to do to stand out? All insight/tips would be greatly appreciated :smile:

No 'prestigious' ECAs? You may have to explain what they are on your application or in your interview, but you have a number of equivalent activities available to you:

Royal Canadian Army Cadets
Royal Canadian Sea Cadets
Royal Canadian Air Cadets

Venturer Scouts (where you can earn the Queen's Venturer Award, equivalent to the US Eagle Scout award)

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme (can be pursued independently or through the organizations like those listed above, see http://www.dukeofed.org/ )

While not as common as in the US, the NHS does have chapters in Canada. If your school doesn't have a chapter, starting one would be a good demonstration of your leadership ability.

Ah yes, thank you very much for your insight. I'm well aware of the cadets program, in fact there's a sea cadets station located in my city. I wasn't aware of the venturers scouts, but now I will look into it. I'm also going to talk to my principal about starting an NHS chapter in my school. Thanks a lot! :smile:
 
Don't forget, you can find Boy Scouts pretty much everywhere worldwide.

There should still be student government positions available, plus a variety of club officer positions, school/community acting, band, and school newspapers. Your ECAs don't have to be linked to military activities to be of value to your application.

We used to live in Canada and I remember, when it looked into it, that some states require that their state is your domicile- meaning you actually live there, rather than just own property. You'll probably need to contact the congressperson from CA-15, and also the senators for the state, to find out their policy.

Do you have Canadian citizenship? If so and if you get accepted, you will have to renounce your Canadian citizenship.
