For those people now receiving Navy ROTC scholarships and are thinking about reapplying to the USNA, what plans do you have? Are you retaking the ACT, CFA etc....?

DS is still thinking about it. At this point, he thinks he will start the app, get most done before he leaves for school (Univ. of Mich) and then decide while he's there if he wants to continue the process. We have heard of so many that are initially gung-ho about reapplying but get to their schools and ROTC and love it, so he will see what happens when he gets there.

Doesn't have to take the ACT (has a 36); definitely will use morning PT as help for the CFA (had all averages, except for max on the sit-ups and ball throw).

USNA admissions counselor said he was a victim of numbers, just not enough slots. All he can do is excel in college and get a great letter from the NROTC commander.

Right now our concern is how he is going to take an English or history class. UM College of Engineering has a set class schedule, that has him at 17 credits;the school has a max of 18, so until he talks to an advisor at orientation, I don't see how he can add either of those. Also, his English teacher LOR was from his junior year English, but he had the same teacher for senior year...not sure then if he can or can't use him again.

AND he has an appointment to AFA he is still deciding on...have I mentioned I need a drink?

jjlma, any idea what your DS will do?

ooh, DialtheGate, that is a tough decision in front of your DS. Hard to believe that UM CoE doesn't have a Humanities requirement - I can't imagine he'd have to take ALL techie courses freshman year - there has to be a way to squeeze an Eng class in. even at MIT (Eng. major) we had to take some Hum credits first year.

But first, sit down, put your feet up, and have a gin&tonic.

He can attend the AFA and request a naval commission upon completion. Depending on the "environment" at that time, there may need to be a midshipman who wants to commission into the Air Force. We had a couple of nuclear engineering submariners who graduated from the AFA.

Personal opinion: Leaving an ROTC program to start over at the Naval Academy will only delay your commission and not advance your career.

Roseville, we are heading for spring break next week, will definitely "relax" then!

Math (4 credits), Chem (5), intro to engineering (4), and then a class for humanities/social science equals 17 credits, he has to take NROTC, which is 2 credits of the humanities/ ss slot. The English and history classes are all 4 credits; school says a max of 18; we are wondering if there will be a waiver or something where he can go one over so he can take it. We'll see. I am quite sure he isn't the first and certainly will not be the last with trying to make this work.

The hard part about alllll the information available on this amazing forum is that I think we know just about all there is to know about the academies (except for actually experiencing it) but very very little about ROTC and the individual university. I think we are a little spoiled on the academy side. There are 40,000 students at UM, I think they must know what they're doing. He will be ok once he gets there. It's just hard waiting.

For most schools, ROTC classes don't count towards max credits. You should call the registrar's office and see. Because of this, I've been taking 20 + credits a semester without technically overloading.

Dial, I know each school is different but my DS is taking NROTC intro to engineering (not sure what it is called) instead of the regular intro to engineering that most freshmen take. Maybe it works that way at UM too? That would free up a few credits if it were the case.

Thanks afrotc16 and navymom!
He meets with a counselor mid June during orientation so that's when he will iron out his schedule. Right now all we have is the course catalog to go by. I know there are lots of kids there with his major, so it will all work out. It's the not knowing that is frustrating.
He bought the prom tickets yesterday so that will give him something to focus on!
Navymom, are you guys football fans? Thought of you last weekend while I was watching the badgers sping scrimmage.

Oh yes, love me some football. Will miss watching my DS playing in the high school games (they won the state championship for the first time in school history this past year). His sister's are excited to see a badger game this year.

But we will have to agree to disagree on who to root for......DS will be a badger but I am a spartan! :)
