Recognition?

It's into April and 2017 hasn't been recognized yet?

HA! ... This proves my theory that each 1/C reflects those who were 1/C their plebe year. 2014 is a direct descendent of 1994 who were a bunch of (Insert pejorative adjective here) and weren't recognized themselves until May.
 
2017 was recognized as Midshipman today at USMMA. Just saw the news on Facebook from one of my old Aimsters (former Plebe, now MIDN) for those who were interested in this thread!

Congrats USMMA Class of 2017!

USMMA "Class of 2017" Officially Become Midshipmen

KINGS POINT, N.Y., April 14, 2013 – Today, Captain Jay Kennedy, Commandant of Midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, officially recognized the Class of 2017 as Midshipmen. “I am very proud of the class of 2017 for what they have accomplished. This was an unusual and challenging year for them but they remained motivated, bonded as a class, and accomplished what they needed to in order to earn recognition as fourth class Midshipmen.”

The Plebes assembled in Ackerman Auditorium for a scheduled regimental period, not knowing if they would hear the long-awaited announcement. After a briefing by Commander Andrew McCarthy, Supervisory Training Officer, they were told that they had five minutes to change into boiler suits and muster in formation to commence with recognition activities.

Regimental Commander, MIDN Connor McGowan addressed the Fourth Class. He said, “Class of 2017, congratulations on your achievement in becoming 4th classmen. I am honored to be able to welcome the class as a full part of the Regiment of Midshipmen. Let no one tell you that your accomplishment is not great. You have overcome the great challenge of plebe year and grown together in forming your class. As part of the Regiment of Midshipmen you are now directly responsible for how the regiment operates, functions, and changes. It is now just as much your regiment as the classes before you. With this, be mindful that your actions and works will shape the regiment.”

The newest midshipmen are glad that they no longer will have to square corners, run to class or maintain the plebe regulation haircut. Most importantly, they are thrilled to finally be called midshipmen.

Recognition

I was beginning to think that they would NEVER get there, but as it turns out the Class of 2014 chose 4/14/2014 at 4:00pm to start the event. They are now MIDSHIPMEN and this “momma” couldn’t be happier. :smile: CONGRATULATIONS to the Class of 2017!!!!! :thumb:
 
Setting the record straight

Congratulations to the Class of 2017!!! Very happy for all of you.

But just to set the record straight, the class of 2014 was not recognized in May but on April 6-7 I believe, not early but certainly not as late as some.
Just saying -- in response to KP Engineer's comments.

Sadly, our son was disenrolled back in October ('14) in his senior year. Long, sad and purely "sea project problem" first-offense-kind-of-story with not one honor violation nor failed class in his 3 years there. Unlike a recently setback student who was brought up before both academic and an honor board. Hmmm...
Exhausted all avenues we could afford and sent him off to A&M at Galveston, where there are many recently separated KP students, go figure!

But onward ho we go -- miss KP and all its good stuff but don't miss the trials and tribulations.

But this thread is not the one for griping --- Happy Day for 2017!! Best of luck on your next adventures!!
 
SPLAT! Back to the reality of how stinking hard it is to graduate from KP!
I hope the new Fourth Class had a night of merriment- back to work Midshipmen!

They old saying "sometimes it's not what you know but who you know".
I was surprised to hear that the individual was allowed to stay having failed 2 sea projects and plagiarizing a third.

I also recently found out that SUNY Maritime will no longer accept Kings Pointers who are academically disenrolled.
