Hi there. My eyesight is below par for any Navy Pilot slot as of today (I believe it's 20/60); however, I got confirmation from my eye doctor that PRK surgery would raise my eyesight to normal (if not better) levels. How does the USNA deal with midshipmen with poor eyesight that are competing for Navy Pilot slots?

If you've gotten successful PRK, just the same as everyone else. As far as medical stuff goes, the only thing the selection board cares about is qualified/not physically qualified.
PRK will happen up to a year before service selection, and by then your eyes should have stabilized to the point where it's not an issue (waivers are granted pretty much automatically).

Check the DODMERB forum but don't think it is advised.

Just DO NOT get any vision correction surgery done prior to entering USNA or you won't be attending USNA. The Navy will perform the surgery at a Navy medical facility. My DS and one of his roommates had correction surgery a couple of months ago.

Thanks for the advice. I already knew not to get eye surgery before attending USNA; I just wanted to know how the policy itself works once you are attending.

+1 for the DO NOT GET SURGERY before entering.

The surgery will not be offered if vision is still changing significantly because it will be needed again in short order.
