DD found out today that she is being offered AOG Civil Prep. Strangely she found out because of emails received from three of the schools on the list.
She is still not 100% decided if she will accept since she also has a 3 year ROTC scholarship.
As I know it, the possible schools are:
Marion Military
New Mexico Military
Greystone
Valley Forge
Hargrave (maybe)

not sure of the others.

Am I correct in my understanding that USMA sets aside an equal number of appointments for next years class as the number of AOG prepsters?

Maybe we could get a running list started of where people are going to go?

I believe that Northwestern Prep in Crestline, CA is now part of the AOG program.

I don't know that an equal number of appointments are set aside, but it is considered the "golden ticket", meaning that the appointment is hers to lose as long as she works hard and does well as a prep.

My daughter declined a Type 7 scholarship to attend NWP as a free agent. After her TWE last year, we sat down and very carefully charted her options of civilian college w ROTC and reapplying vs. being a free agent at a prep program. As a sponsored prep, IMO, that is a no brainer. However, the various programs have different approaches and pros/cons. Talk to them and ask tough questions. She loved NWP and will be in the AFA class of 2018.

Good luck!

Going to a civil prep school on the AoG list is not a "sure-fire" ticket to an appointment to WP. The candidate must take required courses, do well academically, pass the CFA, and complete a list of administrative tasks.- including applying for another nomination. However the sponsored prep has a MUCH BIGGER chance than a self prep. This is a great deal and worth the one-year wait!

Agreed a Sponsored AoG Civil Prep option is not a guarantee - the seat is theirs to lose.

For what it’s worth - this year all 25 AoG sponsored cadets from MMI received their appointments and I believe there were 26 from last year (100%) who also received their appointments. I will also add the additional year really sets the cadets up extremely well for their plebe year at West Point.

Yes – your DD will be required to gain another congressional nomination however all sponsored AoG Civil Prep cadets at MMI were able to secure a nomination. Your DD will also face a year challenging academic year but the faculty is ready and willing to help if a student is struggling.

I will close in saying whether it is NMMI, MMI or another prep school option – these organizations are invested in the success of your DD or DS and will do everything in their power to ready them not only for the application process but also for their years at the academy. So very grateful my DS had the opportunity to attend MMI as he is extremely well prepared for his first year at West Point.

Congrats and best of luck to you and your DD!

BTW - did not at all mean to rebut or make light of any of Maj Hanaks responses. If there is one person on this forum to take your cues from regarding prep schools options...he is the one!

Thanks! I'm only here for the next month though. After 42 years in uniform (USAF and NMMI), it's time for me to retire.

Retirement?

Wow, how many youth have you built to take on the day? Countless, countless, you have been a great pillar for so many.

I thank you for your service, passion and dedication!!!

As one of the posters indicated, for those with AOG scholarships, the appointment is theirs to lose. Of those in DS' class of 30 plus at MMI, only one did not receive an appointment. Of those who went on to WP, I believe only two did not graduate. It thus truly does do a good job of preparing one for the rigors of WP. BTW, my guess is most of the AOG participants will turn down ROTC scholarships to attend civilian prep. My son turned down 4-year scholarships to do so. Best of luck to DD!
