applying to class of 2019(i know its really early)

So I applied a few days ago and my portal stayed at applicant however it stated that I am "competitive". From the description it seemed like if one is competitive the it should change from applicant to candidate. So I'm just wondering if that happens to everyone or is it because I began the process very early...

From the 2013-14 catalog:

Candidate
A precandidate who has a nomination in an authorized category (also referred to as a nominee).

So unless you have a nomination in your pocket, you'll remain listed as 'competitive'. I assure you that you have more important things to think about than a label on an application. Best wishes.

In years past I recall it basically standing still for everyone until end of June/early July. That is the time ALOs are assigned and DoDMERB exam appointments are given out.

Right now the AFA is finishing up 18s appointments and prep school slots.

This is an emotional marathon, trust me you have probably six months at the earliest before you will find out if you have a nomination. Than you could have another six months of waiting for an appointment.

Submitting early does not result in getting an appointment early.

Right now keep taking your SAT/ACT. Start practicing your CFA. Apply for AFROTC. DON'T HOVER over your PCQ everyday for a change.

It should appear immediately after login. If you don't see it yet, don't worry. The label on the portal is not a big deal at this time.

As PIMA said, you need to focus on maintaining or improving your academics by taking /scheduling the most challenging courses available to you, participating in extracurricular activities which you enjoy, pursue leadership opportunities, and get in the best physical condition you can. Make sure you participate in activities you enjoy. It is better to do a few at great depth than to do many superficially. If you have questions, be sure to ask. This pursuit is so unlike any civilian college application. Best wishes to you and the OP.

well im finishing up my freshmen year as an engineer at UMD, and with my stats was fortunate enough to be in the honors college (top 10% of 10,000 admittants). On top of that im in the AFROTC program here to as well as other stuff. So really all i need to focus on is the CFA and nomination process, which ive started

Our DS commissioned from det 330 and was in the honors program,(non tech/AFROTC scholarship) also interned on the hill. Det 330 is an amazing unit, they have been awarded the best in the nation often, 2012 was the last year I know they won.

That being said, MD and VA are very competitive for noms.

You have a nom most can't get .... ROTC. Talk to your CoC and ask for support. Unless the det has changed dramatically in the past two years they will support you 1000%.

FYI, our DS will wing Friday along with Fencers DS {AFA}, after the EA bloodbath this week I would definitely go AF, but my only question is your motive. by the time you go to the AFA, you would only be 2 years from commissioning, and going AFA = 4 more years.

Just asking what is your motive at this time for attending the AFA? Is it commissioning purposes, lifestyle, dream? If I sat on a nomination committee in VA, I would want to know why with only two years from commissioning as an AFROTC cadet you would want to hit the restart button, especially as a cadet in the honors engineering program. If you are in honors at UMDCP, I would also think you are AFROTC scholarship, and like my DS, awarded merit money from UMDCP, hence the bill is a free ride or dang close to it,. Free if you were a B/K recipient,

It's been my dream since elementary school, and on top of that; in high school there was no way I would've gotten in, mainly because of my physical fitness. That still hasn't stopped me, and now I'm fit enough to do it. But the main reason is ive always wanted to be an officer in the air force, and my involvement in ROTC confirmed that. However, ROTC isn't enough for me, i grew up in a military lifestyle and thats what I love. In my opinion, correct me if im wrong, 2 years of ROTC and AFA cant hurt in developing me as an officer. And i agree it seems kind of dumb to start over after two years, but i see it as an opportunity to mature more, make mistakes, learn from them and in the process make myself a better person and leader.
