Which plan B to prepare for Reapply class of 2019

My DD is weighing her options for next year knowing she will be reapplying to SA's. USNA is her #1. Her numbers were outstanding #1 in class out of 350, 30+ ACT all sections, Varsity sport, community service, award winning artist, NHS, etc. Her BGO was actually somewhat upset she didn't get offered an appointment but with the apparent drawback she was a fatality of numbers I believe. Her options include BFE's from two elite academic institutions:

1. NYU
2. University of Richmond
also
3. waitlisted at University of Chicago.

Or:

4. She is a RA at a small private NAIA institution where she could play a small college varsity sport

I am looking for any and all opinions on what is the best course to fortify her College Reapp for the Naval academy. I would love to hear from all of you BGO's out there as well.

Since she's apparently set on the Navy, I find it interesting that she didn't apply to any schools that have NROTC as a back-up. Is she also interested in AROTC?

In answer to your question, I think any of the schools she is accepted to would be good, assuming the takes rigorous freshman courses that closely mimic plebe year courses, ie calc, Chem, physics, etc.

The college is not as important as the courses she takes. I frequently hear about students who "can't" take certain plebe courses b/c their college requires them to take too much other stuff, doesn't have room b/c medical school wannabes fill up all the chem classes, etc.

So, I would start by investigating whether she can take the following courses in the first semester: English (with writing requirement), US or world history, calculus and chemistry. Physics could be substituted for anything but calculus and an engineering course would also be helpful.

USNA doesn't really care too much about the school beyond that it's a 4-yr university, and all those you list are strong academically. Beyond the above, she should pick the school that most interests her in the long term in case reapplying isn't successful. The most important thing is for her to be happy with her choice.
 
checking in to AROTC at Richmond. Really got turned on to SA's late and lack of app to ROTC's was simple oversight.

thanks for the help '85. I didn't know if playing a varsity sport at a 4 yr institution would be helpful

she got a 5 on her AP US History AP exam which apparently allows her to clep out of history at most universities. Should she still take a history class first semester?

She doesn't have to. But then the 4th course should then be engineering or physics and that's a heavy load. She still could take world history or some other "legit" history course.

A couple of years ago there were at least 5 accepted candidates (out of about 25) from our state who had a year in college; 4 were re-applicants, 1 a first time applicant. All took some form of engineering as a major at 4 year universities--all different colleges--did very well academically, took a full course load--17 to 19 credit hours--and I know at least a couple did extra curricular activities, club sport with some travel, ROTC, volunteering, leadership classes etc. Recommend reading the sticky at the head of the 1st page if you haven't already; pretty helpful information. :smile:
