This is probably a touchy subject, but everyone is asking about the AF cadets that got EA's. and I'd like to know the stats of those that didn't. So, please, when you feel up to it, post GPA/Major/PFA Score/AFOQT/Rated or non/Tech,non-tech or nursing. Also, I am just wondering about any possible back up plans, or other options there are.

2.9/aero engineering/96/96/rated/tech

Checking out army/navy scholarships. I hear they have some good ones for ROTC and OTS. Other options are do a 500 year, try for OTS, civilian, or enlist. AFAIK those are the only options out there.

Do you know your commanders ranking?

My DS's info:
2.7/Aero Engineering/98/93/Rated/Tech and his commander's ranking was "in top 5", nothing more specific.

My DS told me that others at his Det that didn't get EA were Aero, tough program and GPA impact. Seems like the GPA line caught some of these folks that were Aero Eng. Unfortunate is an understatement.

Keep in mind your DS does not need a scholarship to participate and commission through AROTC. There is no application for a 2 Year Scholarship; it is given by the unit to cadets who have earned it. He may have to spend some time in the unit first. Good luck to him!

cadet 15/Applied Math/ 3.19/ 87/93/non rated/ mid 1/3/ SAT was 1480/1600

Do any of you have anymore tips about what to do if a cadet does not get an EA?

The options I have heard are pretty much 3 options: Talk to your cadre about coming back as a 500/ trying one of the other branches, trying OTS (you can apply a year out from graduation), or separate and be done with the military. I am doing option 3 and graduating this coming December (I could not extend out 2.5 more years when I could graduate this fall). I can't do OTS because of special circumstances. I am now looking into jobs into the civilian sector and I am extremely blessed to have a major that has already opened up many doors for me. Within 48 hours of finding out that I didn't get an EA, I moved my graduation date up a year and had 5 job offers, so I am very blessed to have many options. Best of luck in whatever route you choose!

If your university offers it, you may be able to swap ROTCs. I know AROTC has accepted people into the two year program because transferees have had the two years of AS classes. This may not be true at other universities, but I know people who have done this. Granted there's little to no "Rated" jobs, but graduating and commissioning in the original time frame is possible.

This is only information I know about my university, so the environment at yours may be different. That was my original plan B.

Does anyone have a history of the EA allocation percentages?
2014 was 60%, my understanding was that 2013 back to 2011 were in the 90+% area, 2010 was low.
If someone has that data it could help decisions about going AS500 and trying again next year.
No guarantees, but is a reference point.
Thanks

I would not look at current history with guidance for 500 selection opportunities.

You need to look towards the future and how many the AF needs come 2016.

In the ADAF world a 500 is considered APZ.~~ limited slots, thus, as a 500 must prove to the board they as a second bite at the Apple are a better option than the 200., first bite.

This may be harsh, but the reality is, unless the AF pipeline opens up A LOT next year, the numbers will not change, and odds for a 200 selection rate will be higher than odds for a 500.

2.9/Chinese/96/99/non-rated/language. Commanders ranking was middle of the group.

I was told that my stats were within 10% away from the cut off point.

My recruiting commander said that if I didn't care for flying, AROTC would be a good option because they have their training junior year, so I wouldn't have to deal with the stress, financial difficulty, and shame for being a AS500. The shame part only applies to myself.

With a 2.9, you seriously run the risk of falling short of an active duty commission through Army ROTC. I don't know how Air NG/Air Force Reserve accessions work, but if you prefer either of those over the Army NG/Reserve then Army ROTC might not be worth it.

First off please let me say to those of you who were selected for EA, congratulations. For those of you who were not, chin up. If you did your best then that's all you can do. Hold your heads high and press forward. I do have some concerns when I read " give AROTC a try". The Army is downsizing as well. In addition, a GPA below 3.0 - 3.25 coupled with a mediocre PFT will likely mean you will be offered reserve or NG. Getting an AROTC slot going into your junior year may be much more difficult than you think. Here is a realistic question to ask yourself. Why should the Army offer a slot to a potential cadet who was not selected to move forward in a different branch? If you were cadre at an AROTC unit would you rather offer a shot to a cadet who has been in your unit the previous 2 years and has taken part in all of the training and EC's or would you make an offer to a cadet you know very little or nothing about? A cadet that chose a different branch but now has asked to come over after not making the cut? These are hard but valid questions. My point is have multiple plans in your mind. I wish all of you the best no matter where your path takes you.

3 of my friends who didn't get EAs just joined Army ROTC! So happy for them :). Hope they get a chance to serve that way. Does anyone know what their two years in AROTC will be like? I heard something about them going to LTC this summer (kinda short notice) to get caught up and about AFROTC classes counting for AROTC credit. Any idea how this works?

Why should the Army offer a slot to a potential cadet who was not selected to move forward in a different branch?
Possibly because one branch's loss is anothers gain? Due to circumstances beyond the control of many of these cadets the AF had to make some VERY difficult decisions concerning their projected commissioning size for 2016. Lots of great candidates that would make excellent officers were not selected for SFT due to their major(s) (which the Army is barely interested in) and rated vs non-rated AFSC choices (which the Army is also not interested in). Why shouldn't the Army be interested in smart, hard working cadets that want to be commissioned and serve their country?

Is this an either or decision for the cadre? Will the Army need to cut loose cadets in order to accept new prior AFROTC cadets?

I have to agree with aglages on this one.

The ROO at my son's Battalion used to joke that AFROTC was one of the best recruiting tools they had. AF Cadets would either switch because they wanted something different or would come over if they did not get a EA slot.

Some of the AF cadets I have read on this thread that did not receive an EA slot had great GPA's and PFT's, some of these cadets will find themselves toward the top of the OML in the Army.

Granted some of these AF Cadets that have lower GPA's may find that they will not receive Active Duty. These cadets will still have the opportunity to complete ROTC, Commission, Wear the uniform, and serve with honor in either the Reserves or National Guard. Much better then the option the AF gives them which is "Thanks for playing, see ya"

It is important though to realize that not all Battalions will have room for these transfers. Some Battalions are currently over capacity and will indeed need to cut some cadets, it depends on the school/battalion. Many will have openings and will be very happy to take an AF cadets.

My son's Battalion has at least two ex AF cadets, if they have room they may get a couple more after this latest round of EA selections.

Thanks for the opinion. Key here is that an AS500 next year would be competing for a slot in the 2017 class. Based on the USAFA 2016 class size (very small compared to prior and 2017 years) it seems like the AFROTC EA slots were also limited for the 2016 class as well.
Also, historically I thought it was seen as a positive if a candidate (for USAFA or AFROTC) kept trying, showed their desire and commitment, and reappiled or went to Prep School, and after improving themselves got a slot. Since many kids don't have the resources or desire they may drop or change to a different career path. Seems like those willing to give it a second try would recieve some type of 'credit' for their desire.
Lastly looking at some of the USAFA threads, you can see that the 10% rule of people posting in these forums jumped from 110 for 2016 to 154 for 2017.

Looking from the "outside" in at this year's 500 selection rate....I would say that the 500s did NOT receive any type of "credit" for their desire. As I said in my earlier post, the 500 cadet in my DDs Detachment that supposedly received the Commanders top recommendation wasn't selected for SFT.

JMPO....but I think you are over thinking this and trying to find some reason why 2017 may be a better year for selection than this one. Hopefully it will. However, we don't know what criteria will be used for the selection process next year, anymore than we know what the AF budget or world circumstances will be. Some things are out of our control and are just a matter of fate.

Good luck to your son and if he elects to go the 500 route I hope it all works out for him. :thumb:

Two of my DS's friends just joined AROTC. Looks like the Army is going to benefit from the Air Forces losses.
