Hello,

Does anyone know if it's against the rules to take online classes from a different university while enrolled at USAFA? I'm not trying to get credit from USAFA for the classes, I just want to take them on the side. Also I'm not asking if its plausable.

Thanks

You're allowed to.
I doubt that they will be able to appear on your USAFA transcript though.

I do not believe it's against the "rules". The final arbitrator of USAFA rules is USAFA....you might want to contact them directly for an obscure rule question.

Considering you did NOT ask whether it's plausible or not I won't comment on that. However, I am curious as to which classes USAFA does not offer, that you are interested in taking online at another university?

Ah, you remind me of the guy who showed up on I-day saying he was going to double-major, do at least one minor, and be an IC athlete..maybe in 2 sports. :yllol:

They don't offer religious classes & I was going to take a couple business accounting classes that I don't think I will be able to fit in my schedule

Did you ever think of using the "extra" time that you would use for these online classes, to become the "Best" cadet you could possibly be? Improve your GPA on the classes you already have. Improve on your military studies. Improve on your leadership skills. Be involved more with your fellow cadets; possibly assisting them to do better. (Especially those who may have problems). Get involved socially with your fellow cadets..... But if you think you can excel to the max in all these other areas and you still have time left over for online classes..... then have a blast.

Remember, attending a military academy isn't the same as attending a traditional university. At a regular school, they only care about your academics. They don't give a rat's hind end what you do with the rest of your life. Actually, they don't even care whether you go to your classes; as long as you pay your tuition and pass the finals. At a military academy, you're there to learn and experience a whole lot more than just academics. But hey.... if academics is all you care about in attending the academy, it sounds like you'll have plenty of time to take online courses.

Let me give you some advice, if you didn't get my previous post. Get through a year or two of academy life before saying things like this. Most cadets find that their schedules are PLENTY busy. A lot of appointees think that the academy will be some variation on their high school life. I certainly did! I figured I'd take it relatively easy my first semester and shoot for a 3.5GPA. I graduated above average academically, and barely squeaked my GPA to a 3.25 by graduation.

Get in, set goals, work HARD, see where you stand, then reorient and re-attack.

While you may be correct about the religious classes.....I wouldn't rule out the possibility that you might be able to fit a few more business classes into your schedule....if that is your interest and you're doing well with your other classes. Of course I would recommend that you wait until you've finished a semester or two before committing to any additional classes....online or at USAFA. Either way....Good Luck!

I'm all ready here at the academy

If you are at USAFA, why are you asking on a forum? Shouldn't you know who to ask on-campus?

I can ask anonymously here.

Please help me understand. I am unclear as to why you would be unwilling to ask a direct question concerning on-line classes, religious or otherwise. Would taking a class in "Wicca Practices", "Lutheranism", or "Accounting" on-line be viewed so negatively at USAFA that you would want to keep your activities covert? Please explain, if you have the desire, your reluctance to ask those with the best information.

I'm not being snarky here. I simply want to understand your concern.

My DD took an online course this semester through the University of Oregon. The class she needed for her major is given only during the fall at USAFA but she will be studying abroad in Morocco this fall, so I know it can be done. She also had to pay for it.

Please don't disregard the other replies as not useful. All information in life is useful. I've learned a lot for my life just by watching and listening to others. Even when it wasn't something I asked about or was even initially concerned about.

My take from most of the replies have been: "your primary concern at the academy should be to be the best cadet possible". Being a cadet/future officer isn't just about the major you take at the academy. Its about doing the best you can as a cadet. Academically, socially with other cadets, military studies and leadership, being a role model for those below you, being a mentor or tutor to those who need help, etc. It also means making close friends and camaraderie that will assist you in your growth for years to come.

But it is true that we don't know you. Maybe you're one of those that academics isn't an issue and you're holding a 3.95gpa and you don't need a lot of out of class study time. Maybe you're able to assist others in tour class with their studies and still have plenty of time left over to perform leadership tasks and be a social leader.

If you're ranked in the top-30 in your class in OPA and GPA and still have plenty of time left to do online classes where it doesn't take away from your time with your primary studies and with your classmates, then have a blast. But your academy studies and personal growth with the other cadets must come first. Assuming of course you want to be the best military officer, leader, role model, and cadet you can be. Best of luck to you.

"Also I'm not asking if its plausable"

My point in this thread was to get an answer to my question. That's why I included this. Supplementing my studies with one or two extra courses isn't going to be a significant load on my time, enough to detract from my MPA. Your taking a simple inquiry out of proportion Christcorp.

Sounds to me like he's trying to give you some good advice from an experienced perspective. It seems like you are set on taking some online classes, so go for it.
