Hello,

I am wrapping up my junior year and am really about to start getting into the meat of the SA applications. My main goal is to be appointed to USAFA, however I am also pursuing an appointment to USMA.

I told this to someone recently and this person told me directly that West Point hates women. This isn't the first time I've heard things like that, but this was the first time it was flat out stated. As a teenage girl trying to find the best place to build a future, I'd like to know what you all have to say. I personally don't believe what this person said is true, but I don't have the experience to know one way or the other.

Thank you very much.

ABsolutely not true. Whoever told you that is an idiot. I wouldn't be seeking them out for any further advice. In fact, it sounds like whoever told you that hates West Point.

+1 to Kinnem.

Check the thread on the "Insights to the Class of 2018" and specific references to the number of women appointed this year. BTW, the Director of Admissions is a women...if WP hates women, they sure have a strange way of showing it.

Maybe he/she means cadets at WP hate women. Either way, I doubt it's true. There might be some joking or petty harassment at worst.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I attended last year's SLE and an overnight. Felt just like normal school. No one hated me because I was not a man. Whoever told you that is a liar.

I wonder what it's like for gay cadets, though. I think that's a very legitimate question...

Huh?.....

Part of the process is to take away your individualism, your identity by cutting your hair (pride), taking away your clothes you choose and giving you a uniform. The only privacy you have, until just recent, is in a toilet stall. They break you down and build you up in a team. Cadet Candidates are kept busy mentally, physically and spiritually you don’t have time for judgment of others. Everyone must work together for a common vision, mission. There is no time to worry about being an individual. You’ll be redesigned to put your team before you.

I know this is a very difficult concept to comprehend in your young life. From birth to this point you have been programmed to be me. It’s all about me. There is no room in the Army for, “me”. Bits and parts of you will still exist, core values, work ethic, but for the most part you will care about your team.

Its called, learning how to be a leader "Leadership"

It would be interesting to know how this person came to that conclusion.

Can't say that all Cadets are happy by their open presence, but that is reflective of the larger society and not particular to West Point. The majority of Cadets could care less. Knights Out has been around long before the repeal of DADT, just now it is in the open. There is also the Cadet club Spectrum with officer sponsorship and official functions. http://www.usma.edu/dca/SitePages/Club_spec.aspx

One of the things you will run into when applying to ANY of the service academies is that well-intentioned friends/relatives/neighbors or even the mail man will offer all sort of 'advice' even when they have NO idea what they are talking about. Instead, get your information from those who have actual/recent academy experience.

@time2 Haha...

I totally agree with you!!! Im the barber!

At most, some cadets are resentful that there is a double standard. I don't think anyone here "hates" any particular demographic.

100% accurate, I cannot even begin to count the number of people who gave me tips when I said I was attending USMA. Obviously they meant well, so I welcomed the advice/tips, even if I knew it was incorrect
