This may be a dumb question, but once the ac year begins after plebe summer, how often can plebes use their cell phone to contact parents, family, girlfriend, etc.?

You can use your cellphone at any time for however long you'd like. Its your phone, afterall. Technically you're not supposed to use it during study period but that's one of those rules that is rarely enforced.

On a similar note: Skype is blocked here, and there's no WiFi for facetime, so get an Oovoo account if you don't already have one.

Thanks Shawn for the info. Another question, what's the purpose of blocking Skype?

DoD policy.

And that's the full extent of the explanation we were given. Cheers.

Sounds like a solid explanation.

You can probably count on having it for all times other than study period.

Having your phone during study period will depend on your company and the mood of your company training officer. Perhaps you'll have it. Perhaps you won't. And perhaps you'll be in the library in SDBs with your desk in your backpack, with the least of your problems being the lack of a phone.

Skype uses peer-to-peer networking to route calls, which has inherent vulnerabilities. DoD doesn't seem to like the whole decentralized network thing, so all P2P applications are blocked.

There is one other usage dimension that will be largely out of your control (because as a Plebe you will not always be deciding where you can be or when) which is where you are in Bancroft. Some of the decks have horrible service with all carriers, and calling can be frustrating and/or impossible.

DS said his side of the hallway gets good reception but across the hall is no reception.
