Could someone please explain to me the expected swimming ability upon arrival at USNA? I have been practicing my swimming, and can make the 100m stated on the PTR easy...but treading water for 15 minutes is coming more difficult.

When they test how long you can tread water for, is that simply keeping your head above water for 15 minutes, or can I float on my back/stomach etc?

It's a 20 minute float test. Do anything you want, just stay off the wall.

And there's no consequences for failing or benefits for passing. It's just a Plebe Summer evolution to point out the aqua rocks early so they can work on their deficiencies. The actual plebe swimming class tests elementary backstroke for form, elementary breast stroke for form, a 20m (I think, not sure) underwater swim, a 5m jump, and a 200m timed swim. Validation for plebe swimming is the 200m in 3:30.

nuensis,

Is that 200m in 3:30 an expected requirement upon arrival, an expected requirement by the end of the summer, or the time required to get out of swimming class?

Though keep in mind that getting a 3:30 on the validation test is the minimum and correlates to a 'C' grade in the class overall. To where it might benifit you to take the actual class in hopes to get a better grade. This past year to get an 100 on the validation swim to get a 2:45. (really hard for non experienced swimmers in board shorts so don't be too disappointed or frustrated if you aren't there yet.)

I always thought "validating" swimming meant that the individual had at least earned an A or B. Maybe things have changed...

DS was a Plebe and validated swimming this past semester with an 80 - the lowest score/slowest time that validated.

verified with the course syllabus... For the 200m swim, a 3:30 is an 80%. For the 400m swim (3/C year), a 8:24 is 80%. Those are both minimums for validating.

Is this thread the most updated in terms of the passing requirements for validating the swim portion for USNA? I know things change over the years. If so it looks like a 200 meter swim in 3:30 minimum to pass.
