I am currently a freshman, about to be sophomore, at Towson University at Towson University. I am currently an Astro-Physics Major and I applied to transfer to University of Maryland for the Fall and if denied will apply for transfer for next Spring. I have been extremely interested in the NROTC program but It is not offered at the school I am currently at. That is half the reason I want to apply to University of Maryland.

Here is the thing. I most likely will be studying a total a 5 years so I still have 4 years ahead of me. Because of this, am I eligible to apply for the 3-year NROTC scholarship this coming year, even though I will technically be a sophomore? BUT,wouldn't I be a freshman in the program being the fact I have 4 more years of study left.

Thank you

Three and two year scholarships are only available to those already enrolled in NROTC to the best of my knowledge. You would be eligible to apply for the 4 year high school scholarship as long as you have less than 30 credit hours. You could always enroll in NROTC at University of Maryland and compete for one of the sideload scholarships. I think your best bet at this point is to contact the cadre at University of Maryland and discuss your situation with them. They can probably provide you with better guidance on your possible courses of action.

Yeah I could probably do that. And that's the other thing about this weird situation. I am over 30 credits at the end of this year so I am not eligible for the 4 year scholarship, unfortunately.

Did you want to go Navy option or Marine option? If Marine option you might also look into the Platoon Leaders Course.

I did want to be apart of the Navy Program. Im going to be a sophomore this coming fall and I would do anything to catch up with the rest of the program. Whether it be double amount of the programs or whatever, I would be willing to do it.

My son started NROTC- MO as a sophomore. They started him with the classification of 4C (basically a freshman). He thinks he will be one classification behind until he catches up on his military classes, but isn't sure how that will work. They have been giving him more unit responsibilities also compared to the other 4c MIDN

In any case, at least at his college, entering as a sophomore was reported to be quite difficult to do and he had to make an impression on his interview. Lots of paperwork also. You should get in touch with the freshman NROTC adviser or an officer at the college.
