Does anyone know approximately how fast ones mile or 5k has to be to run with the fastest group for plebe summer? Thanks

Just checked the SOP and it wasn't in there. I imagine they'll just divide yall up evenly after the results of the initial strength test. The fastest group will be all your track and cross-country superstars (including the recruits!). So make of that what you will. Keep in mind you're able to switch groups on any given day. If you're exhausted you can drop a group, or you can move up a group if you feel like you're able to. Detailers usually don't need to be informed of this.

Awesome, thanks for the info.

You should get a good idea of which running group you will be in based on how you finish in the run portion of the IST.

I guess I'm just curious on how large or small the range is within one running group. I guess I'll find out for sure soon enough!

Back when I was a detailer in summer 2011 there were 6-7 groups, ranging from kids who easily maxed the PRT to those who had trouble passing, so you'll find somewhere to fit in. Suggestions were given based on IST times.

YMMV, but as a detailer I didn't follow too closely who went where unless it looked like they were obviously trying to make it easier on themselves (bad) or were purposely bumping up running groups trying to get better (good).

Great. Thanks for the help.

concur with what has been said. I believe DS said last summer there were 7 groups.

Surface?

(Just curious)

Where are they running? Grass, road, track, etc.?

Mostly road. Occaisional sprints out at Hospital Point (grass). I think the fastest groups might have gone over to the track, but most plebes will be doing endless laps around Farragut on running group days.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have seen pictures/videos of plebes running on grass (Pep) and roads.

The grass is probably the artificial turf (or maybe now it's real grass) on the PEP field -- up and back, up and back, up and back . . . The "road" is largely the road around that field, although longer runs will go on other roads in the Yard.

Does anyone know how long we will be running during PEP? On our workout guide the longest run it says to do before the academy is 4 miles, we will get to go further during the summer?

2-3 miles for daily PEP, depending on running group (Group 1 runs much more, Group 7 doesn't really get much in terms of mileage).

Weekly regimental runs are something like 4 miles and the PPW regimental run is 6 miles, but the regiment only moves as fast as the slowest person, and the slowest person is very slow.

How are shin splints generally handled? I've had to switch to swimming and rowing exclusively for cardio due to shin splints so I can heal them before I-day, but I'm afraid they may come back during plebe summer.

Shin splints are common during plebe summer. At 0530, you'll go to physical therapy instead of PEP if you say you have shin splints. They'll probably give you a chit that exempts you from PT, chopping, drill, and pretty much any other physical activity for X amount of time. Furthermore they'll probably tell you to come back to physical therapy instead of PEP for a while. That's how they're "handled" -- physical therapy and chit until you're better.

Now, that brings up an interesting point about chits... YOU DON'T WANT TO BE ON CHIT. Unless you absolutely have to. I've seen someone run through shin splints. He struggled but survived. I saw a girl who was on chit for half of plebe summer because of "shin splints" and that made her look really, really bad to both the detailers and her classmates. Best advice I can give you is not to overexert yourself and be smart during the runs. Don't go too slow, don't kill yourself. You don't want to be on chit unless you absolutely need it. You'll have to use your own judgement.

Thanks for the help. Does anybody also know how to tell the difference between shin splints and a stress fracture?

completely agree with that. There are going to be so many people dealing with shin splints and other injuries that they just push through. Don't be that person unless you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT participate in PEP and running. you lose a lot of respect from your classmates and trust me, they'll know who's really hurt..

stress fractures are tiny breaks in your lower leg bones

shin splints (which i've had since 7th grade) is just constant aching/nagging pain in your lower legs (shins)

I have a very specific spot on my right, inside, lower shin that is painful to the touch. I can also feel it when I walk and climb stairs. It's just hard to tell whether it's shin splints or a stress fracture.
