Would anyone be able to tell me what SAT scores are needed to get past the pre candidate stage? DS originally used PSAT scores that were not good enough. His first SAT scores had good math but only average reading results. He is now taking a prep course and is scheduled for June SAT. He does not know whether to use potentially sub par scores or wait for June results.

Test as many times as needed to get good scores, but enter your best available now. If it is high enough to be deemed candidate status, your candidate kit will be available in due time. Otherwise, no negative effects come from entering low scores. They only take your best from each category (ex. 780 math 550 reading 550 writing 1880 overall; 550 math 650 reading 650 writing 1850 overall as different test scores would be taken as 780 math 650 reading 650 writing 2080 overall)

It is possible that his math score could compensate a bit for a slightly less competitive reading score.

What about ACT scores? I submitted my PCQ with an overall 30 for the ACT (26 in both math and science, 33 in reading, 34 in English, 31 in writing). I am now officially a "candidate" but my ALO says I should try to bring my math and science to at least 28. Would high GPA and class rank offset the low scores in science and math? I have a 4.0 unweighted and last year was 1 of 239 in my class...

The 'average' ACT score is 30 for all 4 parts. I suggest you set your sights higher than average. Be the best YOU that you can be. Concentrate on what you have control over. Do not try to figure out 'offset' on anything since no one here knows who you are competing against. In one area a person with a 27 ACT and minimal community service may win an appointment. In a different area, the class president/football team captain with 35 ACT my be second choice to the Olympic qualifier Boys Nation President/Class President with 36 ACT who founded a nationwide non-profit. The application process is a marathon roller-coaster ride. Do what you love, standout in a few activities, keep your grades up in the most challenging classes you can take, and stay in excellent physical shape. Best wishes. :thumb:

Absolutely use what you have now. My sons math scores were great, but the others were a little bit low. Those that are a little bit low simply appear with brackets around them, so you know which ones you need to work on. Even with the low scores, the rest of his application was strong enough to be considered for early action.

When you say "low" do you mean less than 600 or less than say 550?

Thank you for the responses thus far.
