I chose to post this here instead of military news since it directly affects AROTC cadets. Interesting article in the Army Times. The full story can be seen at the link below.

The Army is bringing in fewer lieutenants, Seamands said.
In 2012, the Army brought in about 5,300 new officers. This year, the goal is 4,100. It also is rerouting some ROTC cadets into the reserve component, where there are shortages, instead of the active Army, Seamands said.

Theoretically, the reduction to 4,100 will have already been accomplished by the number of contracts handed out, and through normal attrition. The Army Times tends to be a bit alarmist and sensational with their facts. If you didn't know better, you could conclude there will be 1,200 cadets that will be cut and/or who won't commission. That's simply not the case.
 
The Army Times is a rag. Sensationalist is an understatement.
 
Well regardless, we all knew this was coming. It was simply a matter of when and not if unfortunately.
 
Got 10 more scholarship winners in my freshman class than I did last year. And I'm continuing to be expected to produce at least 15 new Lieutenants a year. I'm not seeing it where I'm sitting.

Perhaps because it's an engineering school?

10 more? How many total do you have and what percentage of these incoming freshmen scholarship winners will usually commission four years later?
 
14 for a mission of 15, and and I'm going to guess 80% is my retention rate on average, and it is true that I'm about 50% STEM.

Wow! Usually you receive 4 scholarship cadets and this year you're getting 14? Or did I read that incorrectly?

If you usually retain 80% (a great percentage IMHO especially if half are STEM) then maybe the Army is rewarding your program with more scholarships. Certainly going from 4 to 14 is a dramatic increase.
 
I think they got 7 scholarship freshmen in the Fordham battalion but that would include Columbia and NYU
 
I was told that DS' school alone (only one of 11 schools in the battalion) have 8 freshman coming in. However last year they had ZERO at his school and the years before pretty close to ZERO from his school. I do not get the sense there is a set rule of 4 but instead a number that matches their plan.
 
It ebbs and flows. I've had years when we only got one and a year when we had 20 winners to start. some of it has to do with how Cadet Command manages their offers. It changes from year to year. This year I was able to take advantage of how the process went. I do have the highest percentage of offers to mission in the Brigade at the moment, so some of it has to do with hustle. But, the point is I'm not panicked by the reduction in force. The Army is still going to need a bunch of entry level Officers each year (whether it's 5000 or 4000 or 3000) and a high school student that wants to be an Army Officer should still be following the same basic recipe to be competitive.

DS informed me today that at his school this year, 30 cadets became officers in the US Army, well done them. To date only one was refused AD, not high enough on the OML, the other 29 are happy guys and gals in the Reserve/AD. Looking at 2015 when DS will graduate from school, it looks to being a good vintage of officers as they say in the wine trade, but I would say that.
