Is it possible to stay in shape, if not get in more shape, during your freshman year?

It is, and you probably will. I went from being able to do 3 pull-ups before inprocessing to being able to do 14 by graduation.

What about going to the gym? When is there time to go workout (i.e. would morning workouts be feasible)?

It's not difficult to stay in shape at all, and it's expected of you.
It's quite possible to work out in the mornings around 0530, but I prefer going to the gym after class.
If you don't have a training session (mandatory PT) that day, then you can go to the gym with ease.

Even before recognition as a freshman?

My sons stayed in great shape at USAFA. I believe it can be more of a problem (generally speaking) for women than for men, but it is possible and expected that you will be in top physical condition over the four years.

Learn time management skills BEFORE you get there.

There is time. You just can't be lazy. Once you make working out part of your regime, you feel out of place if you skip out on your exercise.

it's easy to get out of shape if you don't manage your time right. part of your job is to stay in shape so it's up to you to make it down to the gym. training sessions will also help keep you shape.

If you train with the marathon club or join the Cross-Fit crew, there are plenty of opportunities to engage in physical training outside of the intramural requirement. If it is important to you, you will be able to find the time to train.

The issue with morning workouts freshman year is that you'll almost definitely have minutes three days a week. So the gym opens at 0530 and you have to be in uniform in your squadron by 0630...I know people who did short runs or pullup/pushup circuits on those mornings, though.

I know a squadron that had "Workout Wednesdays" that had an optional gym session instead of minutes once a week during second semester, but that's pretty unusual. There are several teams (triathlon, Sandhurst, rugby are a few that come to mind) that hold practices on the non-minutes days that freshmen typically attend.

So long answer to a short question-assuming the schedule for y'all is similar to ours, going to the gym on Mon, Weds, or Thurs mornings isn't super feasible before recognition.

Well as my name suggest, I am a marathoner runner as I have run 6 full marathons and 5 official halves. I hope to get a competitive slot on the marathon club.

A bit off for this thread, however, still relevant... does anyone know if we will be able to hit up a gym during summer seminar? -thx

you probably won't have time during summer seminar but you will have PT sessions.

Thanks. I'm mostly just nervous about the practice CFT (that's what they call it, right?). I don't have a gym membership or a pullup bar so I was hoping to practice, but that's all right. Hopefully I can get some good workouts in during the PT sessions :)

TIME MANAGEMENT will be your biggest challenge...however...I will tell you that the gym at USAFA will AMAZE you! It is the finest...no, check that; the one at the US Olympic Training Center is a teensy bit better...but it will amaze you!

IF you are able to manage your time, you will have NO trouble getting yourself it the most amazing physical condition of your life and maintaining it!

Also, sometimes the squadron training officer will support whatever club you are a part of. For instance, my training officer allowed my to miss minutes 2/3 times a week to go swimming in the morning from 0530 to 0630, and then I was on my way to mandatory breakfast.

Don't be afraid to talk to your upperclassmen, but bring it up your chain on command which can start at a few different places depending on your situation. The go to guy will almost always be your 3rd degree coach.

Most of the CFA doesn't require a gym. Push-ups, sit-ups, running, and basketball throw can all be done anywhere. Definitely practice the basketball throw because that's hard to do well if you've never practiced before. it's a strange movement that all comes down to technique. Also, the one you take at summer seminar is just a practice and it will show you what you need to work on!

Can someone tell me if CrossFit is available for the freshman to do? Also what times do they work out?
