I know each school / battalion may handle the specifics differently. However, can someone explain how this works for them (or their DD/DS).

TIA

approximately 45 days after the beginning of the semester, if they are contracted, they receive $600 in their paycheck. That easy. They can spend that on pizza, soda pop, or books. Most important thing to keep in mind is that they will have to buy their books before that money hits their bank account, so come prepared to pay for the first round of books. Also keep in mind that you don't get the money until you are qualified/contracted.

A couple of weeks after semester began, a $600.00 check was deposited into DS's bank account. That's it.

Not to divert the thread, but something we learned with our kids, we have used chegg books for book rentals at a much cheaper rate than their school for used or school rentals. They ship for free and return shipping is free too.

They also used their kindles and bought e-books when possible. I don't think we have spent more than $200 a semester, and our youngest is a chem major, he is taking organic Chem, physic, computer science and art history over the summer. That bill in total was less than 150.

+1 to Pima, our DS rented text books and spent a whopping $175 for the semester. As a business major he was pretty stoked to "make a profit" of $425.

Most consistent payment of them all

These funds seem to pay even when the others don't. It may take an entire semester for tuition to pay but the book dollars actually come in September/January.

Agree with above.

Book money comes much earlier than tuition. Monthly stipend seems to be also on a different schedule, usually on time.

Tuition is its own animal, because there is an interaction between AROTC and the school's finance office. Cadet Command can wire a bulk transfer to the school, and that may not include the cadets' names that bulk money transfer for the semester/quarter needs to be applied to. So Finance has to go to ROTC admin for the official list and make the allocation into the individual students' accounts. Somehow, it's toward the end of the semester that the money gets allocated to the student's account with the school... this does not affect the student much, since the school knows the money is coming and doesn't (usually) put any Holds on the student's registration.

Maybe, maybe not

If you are living off campus and you are waiting for your tuition to pay to create a credit on your account so that it will generate a refund for living expenses it WOULD affect you big time as you will not receive your refund until the ROTC money actually pays.

+1 to Pima.

Something also to consider. Most schools have a facebook page for each graduating class, some students use this as a way to buy/sell books. You could also check there for books. There also may be a dedicated facebook group just for selling/buying books. So look around, and see what there is.

This was how I bought a lot of my books last year. Ex: I bought a book off of a student and I paid $35 for a used Econ book that was listed for over $200 MSRP (not that any book is worth that much anyways :bang:)

Personally, I would stay away from the college bookstore as much as possible, because it's over priced ... however some professors will get you, by forcing you to buy a eBook specific to the college. Unfortunately there's no getting around that. (...$80 for an eBook is rediculous :rant2::hammer::bang:)

Usually those books are written by the prof....that is why they call it Publish or Perish in the collegiate world.

My pet peeve is his often they bring out a new edition, thus many times you cannot buy used.

Or cannot sell back used books when finished because of new edition. Uggghhhhh!!!

You could always try to sell it back to the student populace at a reduced price. At least that way you'll have recouped some of that money to put towards more expensively overpriced books ....

thanks for the tips, especially PIMA and the rent a book suggestion. In our house our idea of redecorating is building a new book shelf. DS didnt even return his books for money while in high school...and I am a purger so this makes me crazy. So buying used books is the way to go. I looked up the sight you listed and they sell used books too, so THANKS!

What. You had to buy books in HS??

On a more related note, reguarding used book purchases - you could also try buying books of an earlier edition. The content/material are usually the same, however the questions will be tweaked edition by edition. Example: physics - only difference between editions are the problems found in the books.

Yes we bought the books BUT I have three kids almost in a row so we got/get use out of them. this wont happen in college. I am going to take advantage of these suggestions and buy used.

The money $$$ for books seems bad but we are the last people on the planet without cable...so its a wash.
