Hi, I am going to be a Plebe and I have some questions. It would be greatly appreciated if they are answered.

1. For those who need glasses, how will we be able to swim without good vision.

2. Are we allowed to bring 2 pairs of running shoes just in case?

3. Do plebes still have to eat facing forward?

4. Also can I bring my own toiletries? (I have an electronic toothbrush with a charger since it helps keep my dental bridges longer lasting)

Thanks in advance

For 3, doing research as an '18 plebe, yes. We have to "chop" our legs around Bancroft (without cutting corners), hold our covers a weird way, keep our eyes on the ship while eating, and of course, sit a specific way on the chair as we eat. But I can imagine all this antagonizing lightens up as the academic year begins. So it's no big deal to me.

LOL -- an innocent one. Unless things have changed ALOT since I was a Plebe (over 30 years ago), the "antagonizing" doesn't end at the end of Plebe summer. It is called "plebe year" for a reason. If anything, the academic year is harder. First, during the summer, the Plebes outnumber the upperclassman , but 100% of the focus is on plebe training. During the academic year, the plebes are outnumbered 3:1 and you are dealing with plebe training as well as a pretty strenuous core academic load, sports, etc. Sure, the upperclass are dealing with academics too, and many (particularly 3rd class) may not pay much attention to the plebes, but there will be plenty of "training opportunities".

You will chop around Bancroft Hall, wear your uniform and carry your cover a particular way (i.e. the right way), keep your room inspection ready, memorize plebe rates, do chow calls, and have come arounds with upperclass all year, every day. Sometimes things are relaxed during Finals , if Navy beats Army, but it will come back hot and heavy at the beginning of 2nd Semester.

This is not meant to scare you -- a lot of people have gone before you, many under much tougher conditions than current classes. You should understand, this is not about harassment , but rather training. You will learn to manage your time, handle stress, and learn to work as a team with you roomates , companymates, and classmates. It might suck at times, but you will look back and remember the good times and friendships that you developed, and quickly forget the bad. (Although, I suspect that you will attend reunions 20+ years later and remember which 2nd class were a$$holes.)

1. You'll wear goggles. Since contacts aren't allowed, you'll just have to figure it out. That's the way it is.

2. Allowed? Probably. Recommended? No. You won't need them. Unless things have changed in two years, you'll be issued two pairs of running shoes on top of the ones you're wearing on I-Day. So having four pairs of running shoes in your already-packed closet is pretty unnecessary.

3. You will sit on the forward three inches of your chair, keep your eyes "on the boat" (facing forward), and "square" your meal (fork comes to and leaves your mouth at right angles). During the AcYear meals are a lot more relaxed.

4. You're permitted to bring toiletries as long as they're not electronic. You won't be able to use your toothbrush. Same thing goes with electric razors. If you bring them they'll be collected and handed back at the end of plebe summer.

It does to some extent. You won't ever have to "chop" at the same speed as plebe summer. Sounding off as you turn a corner will become a mumble instead of a shout. At meals you won't have upperclassmen rating you or messing around with you at all, really. If they do, that's just not cool. You won't "square" your meals and typically an upperclassmen will grant you "carry-on" at tables so you can relax.

That being said, everything you're taught to do doing plebe summer technically carries forward to the AcYear (except squaring meals). But don't let the detailers try to convince you that plebe summer is better than AcYear...:thumb:
