Looks like the US Military is going to get some attention on the names of some of their weapons systems. Then again maybe the Washington Post is trying to deflect attention from their beloved Redskins.

The U.S. military’s ongoing slur of Native Americans, Washington Post June 26.

I recently asked dad who started for four years on the basketball team for the St John University Redmen in the late 1940s about their team name change in 1995 to Red Storm. He said it was the right thing to do. He has always been more concerned with the "Storm" having a decent team than their name.

This is a reflection of a certain segment of our society - they only care about themselves. We spent billions on our pets while watching a TV commercial that a dollar a day we can provide hot meals to five year old kid in some third world country! instead of passing laws, Senators spent time on changing Redskins name; instead of leading the nation, playing golf is more important, flying on private jets to fight the climate change. I don't like these folks as they want us normal folks to how to think and act, regardless what they do. Reminds of either 1984 or New Brave World, where the government kept getting rid of words in the dictionary to limit people think.

My friend worked for the Indian Health Service for a few years. MANY American Indians wear Redskins, Blackhawks, Braves and over team gear. Many have no issue with it. Of course, that's not what you hear in the press.

Very True but Dad (A NY Giants and Mets Fan) does not like the Redskins or Braves whatever they are called.

Now that the ball is rolling downhill and gaining momentum, we'll probably have to change the state names of Indiana and Utah. This may cause some disruption, but I suppose it has to be done. Stationery printing companies may actually benefit financially. On the other hand, there won't be many people complaining about not having to spell Osawatomie (Kansas) or Canandaigua (New York) any more. Mississippi (meaning "big river") and Minnesota (meaning "sky-tinted river') can slide since they are not names of tribes. However Congress will have to appoint a blue ribbon commission to investigate whether Kansas ("south wind people") refers to climate, in which case it can remain, or cloaca.

For sentimental reasons, I'm hoping the Algonquin Hotel can somehow have its name grandfathered.

NorwichDad, I suspected you came from great lineage. Did he play for both Joe Lapchick and Frank McQuire?

Yes, he was Lapchick's favorite, not so much with McGuire(senior year). Also had Prof Blood, a friend of James Naismith and 1200 HS wins, as his high school coach before three years in the Navy.

Good grief. Should we also change the name of "El Paso" since it is a Spanish word? There's a fellow named Austin who doesn't appreciate his name being used as a city. If the state of Texas has any honor, they will change these atrocious discoveries.

If you look hard enough for something, you'll find it.

It has been suggested that the name be changed to the Washington Foreskins in honor of all the dxxxhxxxs on the Potomac.

Name Change....

If I held a political office my main goal would be getting re-elected. So how do I keep the momentum? Marketing my name. If I associate my self with doing the political correct thing I will be favored. So the popular thing this week is to force my opinion on sports (entertainment). I can get great coverage with my name being marketed. And the most cost effective way.

Here is a little article about how time have changed in the last 90 years. And how teams got their names. During this time it was considered a good thing.

Now that I think about my town has unique name after a Lenape Native American chief of the 1600s. The name was greatly altered by some locals around a table one night in the late 1600s. I suspect, after consumption of large quantities a recently distilled brew. The chiefs name was altered to its present state that night.

No one here pays attention to that right now. The big fight in town now is with the little league. They replaced the boys little league fence and not the girls sofball field fence. Inflaming the issue is that the recent public awareness the umpires for the boys are paid more than the girls. It is civil war. I am buying batteries, milk, eggs and extra supplies of gas. The fallout shelter is ready.

I have been wondering about the Army helo modernization program. Are we going to inactivate the Kiowas, bring back the Apaches from the Guard for the scout mission, and rename them? This makes Coast Guard planning look good!

Here is the irony of it all. According to George Will's latest column, the initiator of the complaint to the patent office is a Native American ( I am trying to be PC here) on who's reservation is a high school team named......(wait for it).....the Redskins.

Facts…. like "no no, it's not offensive…. cause we googled the tribes?"

Comanche is offensive only because of how much was paid to design the helicopter…. to what effect?

No, like the point that some tribes view it as a thing worthy of giving their blessing to, rather than suing.

Right, and the same can be said for the Washington Redskins. There are a vocal group of American Indians, including tribe leadership, and there are many others who either don't care or like the Redskins.

I'm sure we could find a member of any tribe who takes offense to the military using their tribal names to identify weapons.... likely invoking past U.S. military hostilities with tribes.

I find it ironic that a "white" man (assumption of my part that Simon Waxman is a white, perhapd he has 1/32 American Indian heritage) is speaking and looking out for interest of American Indians.
