A track coach from USMMA has reached out to me about running track at King's Point. I'm certainly interested and will be visiting hopefully sometime soon after Indoc. I've dreamed to attend USMA all my life but now that I have the opportunity to run track at USMMA, I may also apply there.

After lots of research, I'm still a bit confused about what exactly the service requirement/post-graduation life of a King's Pointer is like. I was at an academy night and the representative from King's Point said that there is not a service requirement at all - is this true? What does an average graduate go on to do immediately after graduation?

I really hope these questions don't sound dumb but it seems (from the research I've done) the post-graduation process is a lot less simply determined than at USMA or other federal service academies where you graduate an officer and serve the minimum 5 active years. This question certainly can be answered during my visit, so I apologize for asking here, but I cannot help but be very interested in the matter. Thanks in advance everyone!

These questions don't sound dumb at all. In fact, they have been asked and answered many times, over and over again on this very forum.

Definitely NOT dumb questions if indeed that was what was said at an Academy Night by an admissions field representative. There IS DEFINATELY a post - graduation service requirement assuming you are a US Citizen who gains admission via an appointment under the applicable law - which I believe is currently still governed by Title 46 of the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations and which has a formal tracking and reporting program to monitor compliance by graduates see here: 69 FR 61452. Another good place to see the information "distilled and explained" is on the USMMA Website's applicable web page: http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/application/service-obligation See the applicable excerpt of the applicable USMMA web page below:

Your Service Obligation Contract

As required by Title 46 Appendix United States Code, each student entering the Academy who is a citizen of the United States must sign an agreement committing themselves:
•To complete the course of instruction at the Academy, unless separated by the Academy;
•To fulfill the requirements for a license as an officer in the merchant marine of the United States on or before the date of graduation from the Academy;
•To maintain a license as an officer in the merchant marine of the United States for at least six (6) years following the date of graduation from the Academy;
•To apply for, and to accept if tendered, an appointment to serve as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, (including the Merchant Marine Reserve, U.S. Navy Reserve), U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, or any other Reserve or National Guard unit of an armed force of the United States, for at least eight (8) years following the date of graduation from the Academy;
•To serve the foreign and domestic commerce and national defense of the United States in the maritime industry, in one of the occupations approved for USMMA graduates (see below), for at least five (5) years following the date of graduation from the Academy: ◦As a merchant marine officer serving on vessels documented under the laws of the United States, or on vessels owned and operated by the United States or by any state or territory of the United States;
◦As a commissioned officer on active duty in an armed force of the United States or in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA);
◦As an employee in a United States maritime- related industry, profession or marine science (approved by the Secretary of Transportation), if the Secretary determines that service under subparagraph E.1 above is not available to the individual;
◦By combining the services specified in subparagraphs E.1, E.2 and E.3; and

•To report to the Secretary of Transportation on the compliance with these requirements

Good Luck - I strongly recommend you follow-up and go on an overnight visit soon if you are seriously interested - it's always the best way to get the answers to your questions - even the ones you might not think you have now. Sorry the information you got so far seems to be at least a little less than "straight-forward." Also you weren't the first with questions after researching the topic see this earlier Forum thread that has some good information to help inform you for follow-up questions during your likely visit to Kings Point: http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=14710

Good Luck!

Thank you very much for the information - this totally cleared up my confusion. I will hopefully do an overnight visit in August after Indoc is over.
