I just got back from registering for classes at the University of Minnesota and was hoping I could get some feedback about how the classes I signed up for will affect my chances at West Point. I was unsuccessful in receiving an appointment for the Class of 2018. Here are the classes I am currently registered for.

Fall Semester (18 Credits):
Principles of Microeconomics
Precalculus II
Intro College Physics I
Global Politics
ROTC Class and Lab

Spring Semester (18 Credits):
Principles of Macroeconomics
Calculus I
Intro College Physics II
University Writing
ROTC Class and Lab

Thank you!

I think you're off to a good start! Work hard and get great grades!

Looks like a full, tough course load. Get As in your classes and make friends with your teachers. First semester is what matters.

DS has a schedule that is currently a mess. He plans to reapply to WP...but his school has only 4 sections of calc 1...and they are all full, except the 7 a.m. class which is the same time as the PT required for ROTC. He has to do ROTC, as plan B is the ROTC scholarship. We are hoping for a miracle w/ drop/add so he can get a class that doesn't conflict. I assume there's NO hope of getting into WP w/ out a college calc class on the transcript? :bang:

DS should ask the ROTC instructor if he can be excused from the required PT session. If your DS does good on the APFT, the instructor might be willing.

DS needs to consider why he needs to take the 7 a.m. class. Is it purely about reapplying to West Point or is it about his academic progression? It is what it is as some ROTC instructors are not favorable to ROTC cadets applying to West Point

The 7 a.m. calculus class is the only slot that was/is open. All other calc classes were full (he even did the first orientation session to try to avoid this). He is in a program called the engineering transfer program...he has a math class ea semester for 4 semester, then (if not accepted to wp) transfers to a major engineering school. So, not taking calc will 1)delay transfer and grad if not accepted to wp or 2) give him a first semester w/out a math class, which will look weak to wp. He did take AP calc in HS, and did pass the test...but wants to take calc 1 again so he's better prepared for the rigor of college math.

I'm a reapplicant as well. My schedule is similar to yours.

Calc 1 (4cr)
Chem 1 (3cr)
Chem Lab (1cr)
West Civ (3cr)
Intro To Comp (3cr)
Micro Econ (3cr)

I also took AP Calc in Highschool, but between there being 2 offerings of Calc 2, and wanting a good foundation in Calculus, I decided to take Calc 1. Good luck this semester!

I also had Calc 1 in high school but I simply did not feel ready to take it at the college level. Other than that, our schedules are fairly similar in course rigor. Good luck to you too!
