I'm thinking about applying to the USCGA and I'm wondering what the chances are of becoming a pilot. Do you get any type of choice on what you do? Thanks a lot!

The selection rates on the boards once you get out in the 'fleet' typically hover around 40%. You can apply for flight training every six months though, so if you are persistent, changes are decent you get picked up. Getting flight school directly out of CGA is MUCH harder.

You don't request to fly a particular platform until you are already in flight training and it almost completely depends on needs of the service. When I went though, fixed wing was what everyone wanted. It seems right now, rotary has become popular.

Not intending to promote other websites, but if you head to airwarriors (dot) com there is a Coast Guard section that has TONS of information, cool photos, etc.

I do most of my posting over there, but since I saw your question decided to create an account to answer it! Hope it helps.

Thanks a lot for your time in answering my question! I'll check out the airwarrirors website. Thank you again!
