I run cross country and track. I run because I am very good at running. A friend told me that running is not the best highschool sport for the AFA because it does not have teamwork. I am now disputing whether or not to do soccer instead of CC. Will running or doing cross country increase my chances of getting into the AFA?

If you have a strong application you'll be just fine with track and XC. Obviously go for those leadership positions on the team and compete at the highest level possible, but you're much better off doing what you like and doing it well than trying to change too much to check a box.

I know so many people here that only ran or swam in high school. Do what you like and go study for the SAT.

Four years of both XC and Track here, five varsity letters and one year as team captain. There are still team elements to the running sports. They just might not be as obvious as soccer. I say go with what you love.

Why the SAT and not the ACT? Does the AFA prefer one over the other?

SAT or ACT....Take both and see if one test is more to your liking.

Regarding sports...do what you enjoy...DS did soccer, lacrosse and alpine skiing( which was his favorite) for 4 years. Commitment is what the SAs are looking for not just one year of something to be able check a box.

Straight, simple, honest answer...

CC and track do have teamwork involved. The score is figured out based on team totals and team members work together during races and meets for different strategies. I have been involved in both for three years and I will be starting my fourth CC season soon.

My son's HS had no sports program. He participated in community-based 5K races for one year and worked out at the local gym. Really, the application is a "total package". The best advice he got was to stop trying to figure out what they want and do his best at showing them who HE is. He is in the class of 2018.
