Hi,
I am currently working on securing a nomination for the USAFA class of 2019. My Dad served 22 years as an army officer full time in the National Guard and then retired, so I believe I am eligible for a Presidential nomination. The problem is, I have been looking all over the internet and can't seem to find where I would apply for that. Can someone help me out? Also, what is the deal with the VP nomination? Does the Academy just send the requests to the VP rather than the candidate sending it. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

USNA sent my DS the paperwork for a Presidential. The VP has an online form you can just google. Apply to EVERY nominating source.
 
The Presidential nomination form for USAFA is on the USAFA admissions website under the Nominations page, Military Affiliated Nominations sub category. Very quick and easy to fill out. Good luck!

I qualify for the Presidential nomination through my mom, and the Disabled veteran nomination through my dad. I know that I cannot apply for both, which one is more beneficial?
 
I believe historically the disabled vet noms are less competitive than Presidential due to the regs. Although the Presidential can appoint up to 100 ever year and disabled can only have 65 at any given time, by the time you are competing for a nom., there may be more on that slate than Presidential, thus it will be more competitive.
~ When I say competitive I do not mean getting the nom, but winning the appointment.

Unfortunately due to Gulf II there are more candidates that can use that nom. compared to years prior. If you look back, you will realize it is your generation that will be the first generation not to be alive when 9/11 occurred. That is why the pool size maybe different come your year group even compared to current applicants.

~ Do the math. Basically only 16 on average can be appointed annually. If in years past they had only 50 qualified for this nom., than the statistical chance would be 33%. It has been traditionally 20-25% chance for Presidential.

However, you won't be the only one that is eligible weighing the options. If in 3 years that number goes up to even just over 80 applicants, and by going this route, the Presidential drops in noms. than your chances change.
~ The disabled will be less than 20%, and the Presidential will be over 25%.

You really need to wait for at least two years before this is even a factor in your life. What you should be looking into now is the recent Missouri MOC competition. How many candidates on average per year, what the stats look like for those that were slated, and for those that were charged.
~ It will give you insight on what you need to do in HS academically, course curriculum, SAT/ACT, ECs to be competitive.

You could even ask your MOC's representatives or speak to you ALO about the number & average number of appointments which come from your district. And find out the stats of those from your area who got appointments. Were there any from your school? Are there any students accepted to Ivies from your district? (are there any/many who apply to such schools from your district? What is the historical average of their acceptances?)

Have your mother/father contact the parents group from your area (well, you're still at least four years out so this is really too early) and see what kind of stats the current cadets have.
 
By class of 2019, I believe that the OP means that this is his/her senior year of HS.

Fighter, I think Fencer was answering Sami's question. Sami is a rising freshman in high school. She is being proactive and getting her ducks in a row early :thumb:

If you read through this forum, you will hear over and over - apply for every nom that you are qualified for.

You are qualified for these 6 noms:
the Presidential
the sons/daughters of deceased/disabled veterans
the VP
your 2 US Senators and
your US House of Representative

Apply for all of them.
 
She can't be considered under both the Presidential and sons/daughters of deceased/disabled veterans.

Honestly, that is going to be a very hard decision because the number that can be charged.

I am not saying they are gaming the system, but I am not sure how you can decide due to the fact at their age, there are probably going to have many many more eligible for that pool than previous years.

~ No flaming, but the only example I can think of that everyone will get is:
Baby names. In 1990 Alexandra was uncommon, by 93 it was one the most popular names in the US.

Unfortunately, these children are going to become of age at the same time, when the bulk of our service members lost their lives are were injured to the 100% disability requirement. However, only 65 at any time can be charged.
~ Now let's go back to my baby name example. They may have 35 charged already, and only 30 charges available, but 300 in the pool. That % is lower than Presidential.

The problem is they may be able to find out how many are charged, but they don't know if their year group will be 1994 when Alexandra was no longer the popular name.

We are not psychic and cannot give, or IMPO give guidance regarding this issue at this point, especially since she is 4 years out. She is a rising freshmen, and those stats are probably going to change a lot over the next 3 years.

Well - She should apply to USMA then! :wink:
West Point encourages candidates to apply for all noms qualified for.

Best bet would be when it comes time to apply for the nominations, the candidate should contact their admissions rep at USAFA and ask them what they recommend.
They will know how many slots are available under the deceased/disabled vet nom.
 
Maybe her ALO will steer her in the right direction...

We don't know the nature/extent of the disability which I assume affects the disabled vet nom?
 
At 100% she is qualified, but still goes back to the fact that she will be competing with other disabled vets from Gulf II and Gulf I too. It is a non-competitive nom., and that is the real factor IMPO.

As fencer stated the ALO may or may not be able to assist her. I would think an ALO that is the age of Flieger can remember if there were a lot in their year group that came in with a vet nom since he went to the AFA in 83, and they would have had Vietnam vet parents. This may allow her to get a ballpark from a number/applicant pool as a comparison for her from a historical perspective.
