Alright, here's what I've got so far:

GPA/QPA Scores
- 4.0/4.0 Freshmen Year
- 4.0/4.069 Sophmore Year
- 3.82/3.99 Junior Year (Got a C average in AP Chemistry... still kicking myself!)

SAT Scores (Highest of Two taken)
- Reading: 680
- Math: 710
- Writing: 650

Other Academic Honors/Stats:
- Class Top Ten student Past 3 years (Specific Numbering of students; out of approx. 125ish students)
- National Honor Society Member (possible officer Senior year)
- Weighted classes taken/going to take: Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, Honors English, French IV
- AP Classes taken/going to take: AP Language/Comp, AP Literature/Comp, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Calculus AB

Other Activities:
- Junior year Class Officer - Secretary
- Extremely active in my school's AJROTC - Served as two years as a Staff Official, and am in line to be the BTN/Company Commander (Depending on the size of our unit, which is a small one in comparison to others). Will also have two years of Drill Team Commander and Rifle Team Commander under my belt, as well as possibly Honorguard/Colorguard, and others
- Active member of my school's Varsity Tennis team - Bronze medaled in the WPIAL Sports League (supposedly one of the most prestigious sports leagues in PA), and placed in States (First time in school history our school has went anywhere near as far in that sport)
- Lead my school's Quiz Bowl team, and served on my school's Mock Trial team since Freshmen year (same with tennis). I was also involved with multiple other events, competitions, etc with the local Gifted Students Coaliton
- Serve as a Volunteer Firefighter with my local department, and get quite a lot of volunteer hours there (along with JROTC)
- Serve as a Church Elder for my Presbyterian Church, as well as being active within the organization itself as a youth, including attending multiple various mission trips/adventure camps throughout the years.

College Info:
- Interested Major: Civil Engineering/Architectural Engineering
- Colleges applying for (In order): University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Penn State University - University Park

Any other pertinant info I'm forgetting just ask (minus my SSN, for that just ask the Army - they'll be getting it a pretty good bit so far on their own lol). I'm planning on applying for the 4 year AROTC scholarship tenatively starting Fall of 2015... what do yinz think of my chances?

Since you invited questions.... what the hell is a yinz? Last I checked I was an adult, a dad, a husband, a brother, a son... I don't recall being a yinz. Can't wait to see you refer to a Sgt. that way.

It's a Pittsburgh thing... it means about the same as y'all or you all for you proper grammar people. Reflecting now I'm surprised that I've been using it so much, as I hardly ever use it at all

I think I've only ever heard one person ever use that term haha.

Axxif, to answer your question - it seems like you have a good foothold on everything. Strong GPA, good SAT scores, looks like you have some leadership and volunteer hours under your belt. The one thing you didn't mention (assuming that you haven't taken it yet) was your Physical Fitness Assessment scores (1 min of push ups, 1 minute of sit ups, 1 mile run time). Other than that you look solid.

Don't fret too much over that C - you will have plenty of things to drive you nuts come fall senior year (applying to colleges/scholarships, ROTC applications, etc).

Speaking for Penn State - I don't see a problem with you getting into Penn State or the College of Engineering.

Just one piece of advice for you since you mentioned you were JROTC. Don't come in with an attitude of thinking you know everything just because you did JROTC. And especially don't gloat about positions you've held in your Battalion ... there's probably no one that a cadet hates more than the type of person previously described.

Edit: ... oh you're one of those weird Pittsburgh folks that call whoopie pies "gobs" ... :thumb:

Thompson, to address your post...

When we recorded for our Physical Fitness last, I got around 35-40 sit ups, a 6:40ish 1 Mile, and about 11 Pull ups (we didn't do Push-ups, and I'm not quite sure how it would translate). One thing that I should note though is that the previous 2 months or so before that I got in my bare minimum workout that I normally get, so I would expect those scores to improve well with return to a better workout schedule.

Well, I'd much rather it be an A lol, wouldn't you?

If there's one thing I've learned from these forums, it's that JROTC snobs in ROTC are universally hated. Besides, they're really nothing fireworks-level special, they just teach me that the more I learn the less I know (as I'm sure as a college student you can certainly agree with)

It's not the gobs that we make good, it's the sammiches... although I'd gladly trade one for some ice cream at Berkey's

At the AFROTC detachment I was in, former JROTC cadets weren't resented because of JROTC. In fact they were usually some of the most well liked cadets in the year. That being said, I personally resented the scholarship students who do the bare minimum and drag their flight down because their scholarship status puts them at a higher ranking than the non-scholarship cadets.

I can confidently say that I didn't get first in line for my Unit Commander for nothing (like some units do); I'm one of the most hardest working cadets in my JROTC program. Just kinda saying that to put your mind at rest a tiny bit and what not.

Sunny,

I don't know what det you were with, but I know at my DSs det there wasn't favoritism to scholarship recipients. It was frowned upon by the cadre to ever discuss this issue....think of it like the corporate world, nobody discusses how much anybody makes.

Did cadets know which one was on scholarship? Heck yes, because let's be honest as most college students you are broke, scholarship cadets tended to be broke the 6-14th, and the 20-30th. On the 1st and 15th they are flush with money.

I think what needs to be understood regarding the scholarship cadets is many also have college merit scholarships. Many colleges require them to maintain a 3.0-3.2 whereas, ROTC only requires a 2.5. Their cgpa typically will hover higher than many non-scholarship cadets because they needed both the ROTC and the college scholarship to attend college.

AFROTC gives no points for SFT selection because the cadet is on scholarship, however they do give points for cgpa, and as a CoC they are going to support the cadets that can juggle ROTC and academics at a higher level than 2.9 non-tech.

Just putting it out there for lurkers and posters to understand that what may appear to be favoritism is not in reality. CoCs and their cadre also have to protect their careers, their promotion opportunities, and that typically means supporting those that have strong cgpas.

Back on topic, when you enter ROTC everyone enters with a clean slate, JROTC can be a double edge sword. It can make you shine or can make you look like a jerk. It is your attitude that will determine which side of the blade you end up on.
~~~ IOWS be like a non-jrotc cadet, don't keep bringing up his you did it in JROTC to gain recognition or points with anyone. Keep your mouth shut, listen and learn. JMPO
Are those scholarship cadets that were dragging their feet, so to speak, transferring to AROTC as well.
I think you definitely have a very good chance. My stats were pretty similar, except my SAT scores were a little bit higher, and I received a 4 year at GWU where tuition is 50k a year. The earlier you submit the application, the better. Penn State has an excellent ROTC program btw. They were my second choice after GWU.
No one on this forum can really say....but I think if you can raise your SAT/ACT to 1300 or greater or 32 composite or greater, you would have a competitive application. I'm sure you're aware that if you do not "get" a national scholarship, you can still enroll and be considered for a campus-based scholarship through the battalion at the school you choose...many paths to commission.
I review hundreds of application each season. Without seeing your peer group nobody can say. I can tell you that you have sound credentials and you will be competitive. I do not approve of your school choices though. ;)
Dad- a 32 or higher ACT is far above being competitive.
Thank you, I have retaken the SATs and i'm now in what they call the slump, my scores got worse:(, I might retake them on the next test but I want to have my application in by Oct 3 for the first session.
That's good to hear since i've been nervous about my chances since I started my application, because I can't go out of state for school without a scholarship. I am from SC, and have been stuck in CA for 10 years now and can't wait to go back
If you want to do so, your only shot is to take the ACT test on Sept. 13th (SAT is Oct. 11th) - and probably add rush-processing. Those tests can take up to a couple weeks to process, which is pushing it since you want to get everything in for the first board.
Have you...
sportster97,
Clearly from your 1st choice and avatar you're a gamecock fan... Good times! Have you been to the school to visit, if not make the trip. Excellent all around!
Take the ACT as someone has noted... A 32 would be fantastic; however, if you manage a 30 you will be in good good shape. That would be a 30 in the math & english.
I'll look into that thanks, I keep hearing people say the best chance is at the first board so I want to stack the deck in my favor as best I can.
