I will be contracting this week with AFROTC. Can anyone tell me what the process is like?

Also, I am told the new weight standards (which are pretty significant) will be followed during the process. Can anyone else verify that? Is taping still being done?

Are you asking about signing the paperwork or having to pass the PFT? Some units will require the original birth certificate, some will accept a copy if they can see the raised seal. Plus a non-laminated SS card. You will also need a voided check for your stipend allotment.

Yes they still tape. FWIW, if you are being taped because you are over the max weight it will most likely be part of the rest of your military life. As you age it gets harder to keep the weight off just from a metabolism perspective. They can put you on what is called the big boys program.
~ Our DS was under weight and they had to tape him every semester. He was also given extra calories at SFT because if he lost even 3 lbs, even though he was in the tape level, he would have been too thin and medically DQd at SFT.

As you can see either way it can become a factor.

First thing they did when my son reported in was weighing in - the PFT was run the day after that. As Pima said, the weight standards will follow you everywhere, stay on top of them!

Also, be ready for about 2 hours of sitting there listening to every word of the contract being read out loud to the group and signing papers at directed intervals.

Oh I have been within the weight limits, usually. But this year they dropped the weight by nearly 15 pounds.

Really? I had heard that they had removed the minimum weight standards. Wonder where one can find the new changes?

Interesting. There was panic at my det when the new standards came out, but we were told they didn't apply to us as cadets (because ROTC cadets get weighed more frequently than AD, maybe?). We have been held to the old standard since then and have had no word of that changing.

That might be true while in AFROTC, but in the end you will commission and must meet those standards. Prior to commissioing you will have another DoDMERB exam. Thus, that new rate will get you sooner or later. There is a thread that gojira started @18 months ago. 6 weeks prior to commissioning into the Navy he was disenrolled from NROTC because he was 6 lbs over the max weight. He was then promptly handed a bill for $143k. He will be paying that back for 10 years.

My advice is to be cognizant of the new weight standards or be prepared to pay back the cost of the scholarship, stipend and allowances in 4 years.

Not positive, but I believe they could disenroll you at SFT for medical DQ if you don't meet the tape standards.
Our DS was told if he even lost 3-5 lbs at SFT he would be below the min. standards for taping and they would send him home as a medical DQ. Don't graduate from SFT = No POC. No POC for at least 3 semesters = no commissioning.
