DW talked to DS @ Bliss last nite. Well DS never received a packing list for trip. He flew sraight from LDAC to bliss so he had to be prepared for two trips . I realize plenty DS an DW's had to do this. The preparation may have been his fault.... or not communicated. I don't know. He was expecting a typical set up as if he is @ AT.

Boy was he surprised, No liniens, no supplies, no nothing. What the heck??? Then to top it off he finds out about the pay issue I have read about on here. I have read some remarks where folks think they should not get the extra pay but I do not believed the pay situation was relayed. At least be up front. DS was told he would get $30 a day put in his account at some unknown magic time to pay for all incidentals. Well their goes his spending money for the next school year.

DF had to pull out the check book just for the kid to have sheets to sleep on. #$%^&&#*$$$ is this typical or Welcome to the New Army. The questions are not his so direct all ill intent words towards DF and not DS.

I rode by the New Jersey Middlebrook encampment where the Continental Army kept an eye on the British during the Revolution. I imagine back then there were some screw-ups and complaints too. No food, No uniforms, No amunition, No good weapons, No girls, No heat. Not a single luxury. Not a real good prospect of even winning the war. Thinking about that and the above post, I can LOL & say Welcome to the Club.

BTW
Let him handle it.
Stay out of it.

And Best Wishes

The title "Soldier" comes with absolutely no creature comforts. It will make your kid stronger. I couldn't count the number of times I had to tough it out with only a poncho liner (aka "woobie").

Ohhhh I thought twice before I posted this. The kind of replies I was expecting. Guess I should have thought 3 times:shake: I agree 100%:thumb: his wagon/ his pull. And I am not a hands on DD to a 21 yr old future solider and nor would he want me to be. He is well aware of what he signed up for. You would not think it from my post on here right.... Guess just a Dad being chatty so to speak.... for lack of better words. Son away at camp, daughter just left for freshman year at college DD has no one to talk to....LOL.

He has not complained at all, as far as I know, just send more $$$ mom my atm card crashed.

And by the way THANKS to you guys on here who have made the sacrifices:thumb:

true!
Don't ever leave home without your poncho liner!

Beware, voice of reason ahead...

It sounds like some poor leadership. Generally, the Army doesn't issue linens for those types of events (CTLT). That being said, usually CTLT cadets stay in Army lodging which is essentially a hotel. I'm curious as to where he's staying that he has just a bare bed? Nonetheless, leaving him uninformed about the need for those was the wrong answer.

Just make sure he claims the expenditure on when completing his travel voucher.

That will not be covered. It falls under the "incidental" expense category. This he's expected to use his M&IE (aka "per diem") to cover it.

Whats CTLT

Lurking for learning. What is CTLT? I thought the 33days of LDAC (Or whatever it will be called) is all that the cadets do in the summer. My DS is an MSIV but did not go to LDAC this summer due to some engineering classes he needed, to stay on track for graduation in 2016. Just thought I'd ask for vacation planning, might be the last one with him:frown:

Thanks

Possibly an old barracks? Long, long time ago when I did DCLT at Fort Jackson, we stayed in a converted WW II barracks with single rooms. I believe host installation supposed to pay for lodging. So say 100 CTLT cadets, $50 a day for lodging could be a nice change to save if there is barracks space to put them up.

My son did CTLT at Ft Bliss early this summer before LDAC.

He stayed in something he described as barracks. Not a hotel. It was a short walk to the mall that is on the base. He did not have linens or pillow either so he bought something cheap at the mall. He said he got everything he needed for < $25 so it was no big deal.

He had a roommate but with both of them participating in separate field training exercises they did not have many nights where they were both in the room. And at least a week were both were away.

That's one downside of CTLT. With so much support being given by the host installation, experiences will vary with each one, and some of the people at the host installation that are tasked with the additional duty put little effort into it. The same can be said with the officers cadets are assigned to. I flew to CTLT immediately after LDAC, got off the plane, called the officer I was assigned to and found out that he had PCS'd to the other side of the country and I would be with an entirely different branch.

I stayed in temp housing on post (ours was essentially an extended stay hotel room) and signed for linens, etc. I have friends that have stayed in off-post hotels, and others in barracks. Some with linens, others without. Sorry to hear about the crappy situation.

He'll get money for incidentals that covers stuff like this, but if he is without support for food, such as not being allowed to eat at the DFAC or whatever, he'll be able to take care of that when he and his HRA complete his travel voucher upon his return.

My son was at Bliss last summer with for his CTLT and flew directly from LDAC. When he was in a Field Training exercise, he slept on a cot or on the floor. Otherwise, they were put up in a hotel.
Who is he shadowing? Is he in the field?

Not sure what group he is shadowing. He would rather be in the field sleeping in the woods I assure you...... he was hoping LDAC would be mostly a field experience and maybe it was never got much of a reply from him. He is not a creature comfort kind of guy.
Not sure how much of the sheet thing was a DM thing because he just mentioned it in the conversation. I think the call was probably more about weekend spending and eating money since he was cashless (spent cash in airports etc traveling) and having ATM issues. If he can eat somewhere other than the mess hall or an MRE then here he comes :)

I have text him several times and ask how CTLT has been and no answer and that is no surprise. He has his card now so I am sure there will be no more contact until he needs a ride from the airport to get back to school.

Sounds like he's good now.

Not sure how big of a deal it is, but if he's been given access to DFAC but still chooses to eat elsewhere such as on post Charlie's Chicken or Burger King, he won't get money for that. Only if he isn't getting support. Just thought I'd share in case he was banking on that to eat out each meal.
