My DS will be headed out next week for a CVW. Do they try and match them with cadets from their home states? Just curious. I think it would be nice for him to meet someone with a similar background.

No. I'm from PA and my plebe was from Michigan. Other 2 guys in the room were from Kentucky and Virginia. Not to be mean, but it really doesn't matter. Bring your plebe some cookies and you'll get along fine. Tell him to ask questions and to show some enthusiasm.

Though they may match you with a plebe with similar interests. Last fall my DD, who plays rugby, was matched with a plebe who was on the women's rugby team (as was her roommate).

The way it works is that if a candidate is going on a CVW due to a sport (football, soccer, hockey, crew, etc.), that coach will match them with a plebe from that respective sports team.

If your candidate is going on a CVW that's not related to a sport, then what happens is that plebes from different companies just volunteer to take in a candidate for that weekend (or at least that's what my company did last year) so in that case it's completely random.

Hope that helps - 2017Mid

Thanks for the info. Many have suggested bringing cookies: do the plebes really want them? My DS son absolutely does not like doing anything that looks "corny", so it may be tough to get him to pack them.

My daughter brought peanut butter cups last year and they were very much appreciated! One roommate hid them from the other since "they'd be gone in 1 day." She promised to dole them out over the next few days. :)

My son (per request) did not bring food for his visit last year. He was on a NCAA visit, staying with a Plebe from the team but they work pretty much the same way as a CVW.
Fast forward to this year and my now-plebe son told me that he and his roommates get along well because they all 3 agreed to no food in the room. It keeps the unwanted guest population down and by that I mean critters as well as upperclassmen. Your candidates host may have a different opinion though and it's a lovely gesture-just make sure they are well-wrapped(think Tupperware).

Halloween is coming up and Plebes have to acquire candy for the upper class to trick or treat. If you have an Oct CVW you would be doing them a nice favor by bringing bagged candy.

I'd love cookies, and I think most plebes I know would too.

Some other advice:

If your a male and coming up for a CVW, then SHAVE. We all have to be clean shaven so It's kind of weird and sends a bad impression if you show up with a goatee.

This is less of a big deal, but I'd also try to wear a polo and pants/nice-ish shorts. It also doesn't send a great impression if your going with us to class in a t-shirt and gym shorts. With that said, you don't need to show up with a tie or anything that formal.

Also, most of us don't really care if you're #15 on your high school's lacrosse team or if you've got 10 varsity letters on your letterman jacket.... so I would stay away from that stuff.

If nothing else, shave at least. The other two things are forgivable.
