I've read somewhere that the USAFA offers speed reading techniques as extra instruction to help cadets with their workload.

Does anybody know what program they use or what techniques are taught?

I believe one of my sons did take that speed reading EI. As I recall, he said it was quite helpful, at least with the humanities coursework.

I have no idea what program it was.

There's a class called Reading Skills, which you can opt to take while you're at USAFA. I took it last fall, during the first semester of my freshman year. I went from reading at 900 words per minute to close to 2500 wpm. It definitely helps!:thumb:

Speed Reading Class

I took it freshman year and it was probably the biggest waste of my time. You read faster, but the retention goes with it.

I am a freshman and I am currently in the reading skills class. It is not that big of a help, I just wish I had the free period to do homework in.

Do not take that class.
It really was a waste of my time, and that time could have been used doing something more productive.

Son says:

If you read a lot, you can read super fast using these techniques. But for technical material, read slower and have better comprehension.

DS gave it a full thumbs up.
Said it saved him some time and comprehension improved too.

DD gives it a partial thumbs up.
She found the most interesting part the analysis of how she reads (for example, some folks read ahead then bounce back without realizing they do). Some improvement in speed but at one point she was thinking she would rather have dropped it for more study time.

My DS will be starting the class soon. It will be interesting to see what he says about it. The reading portion of the ACT was his nemesis with his high score being a 26.

He said he had no issues with the content and felt he answered all the questions he had time to read correctly but would have at least 9 questions he had to guess on due to running out of time.

Hi! We don't have speed reading as EI, but we have it as an optional class that you can sign up for.
